Letter to Ella

AFTER reading quite a few posts this week on mum’s struggling with self worth, their identity and just sheer tiredness, I began to wonder if maybe that Super Moon had some sort of impact on us. The reason is, it’s been a particularly tough one here too. Although, I well realise there are women out there doing it far tougher than me.

I won’t bore you with all the details, except to say part of it has been three-year-old Ella returning to her tantrum-throwing ways (why, I’m not sure) and five-month-old Holly either teething or just trying to test me. Whatever the case, I’m pretty exhausted this week.

Thankfully, I had cause to open Ella’s keepsake box last night to store away tickets to a Wiggles concert we went to earlier this week. As I was doing so I stumbled across a letter written by her dad and I on her first birthday for her to read one day in the future.

If the Super Moon put me off kilter, then it was the stars that aligned and led me to this, a letter I was meant to reread.

“To our beautiful little girl,

It’s hard to believe a year has passed since you entered our world. On this day 12 months ago our lives changed forever and Ella, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

From the time you arrived you have filled our life with joy. Your wonderful smile, cute little giggle, your character and personality infects everyone you meet.

Ella's keepsake box

Already you are proving to be a clever, if not headstrong, and loving daughter. It makes the sleepless nights and stinky, pooey nappies all worth it.

Hopefully, in future years, you can look back on this little note and understand that, to your parents, you are the centre of their universe and you can be happy in the knowledge there are two people who will love you unconditionally always.

We can’t wait for the birthdays still to come.

Love your mum and dad’’

Enough said really.

That’s just lovely Kellie! Such a beautiful idea to write a letter for her to read later. The super moon hey!! The pinks were very excited about watching it. The biggest pink had learnt all about it at school and was super keen to see it. Hope next week is an easier one all around 🙂 Cazxx

    • Kel says:

Thanks, Caz. I just noticed I’d cut half the letter off, but have now updated it. (We’ll blame that on the Super Moon too! LOL). The part you missed was a description of what Ella was like at age one. It’s so funny how true those words still are.
So wonderful that your eldest pink got into the Super Moon. Such a great thing for them to learn about and then be able experience. 🙂

I’m totally blaming the moon for the crazies around here… well that and the incredible lack of sleep on my part and the fact that it is school swimming week, and that my MIL came to visit LOL…

But isn’t it great how we often stumble across just the right thing to make is reassess, right when we need it most?

I spent some time last night with a sleepless baby looking at old baby photos of all my kids…. it made me appreciate how fast this baby of mine is growing and how soon these sleepless nights will be a distant memory and I’ll miss his baby days….

    • Kel says:

So true, Kate. The letter landed in my lap just at the right time! It’s always a similar experience when looking at their photos for me too.
You’re right, this baby stage goes all too quickly. I still can’t believe we’ve reached six months with Holly. Where did that go? Makes you want to hold on to every moment with them while they’re little.

  3. Trish says:

Just beautiful, hope you have a clam and restful weekend.
I am blaming the moon too for the craziness and lack of motivation.

    • Kel says:

LOL! Glad that Super Moon doesn’t come around very often, Trish!!
And thanks. Having a much better day today! 🙂

      • Trish says:

Back again to read the rest. It’s such a sweet letter. I’ve forgotten about the letters I wrote to my littles. Time for another.

        • Kel says:

Oh, thanks Trish. So glad this reminded you of the letters you wrote for your little ones and has prompted you to write another. I would so love to read them (that’s if you feel comfortable sharing, of course)! 🙂

  4. Cheryle says:

It’s such a lovely way to capture the moments and something for them to treasure in the future for my daughter I wrote her letter in the process of her birth and my divorce about the way her dad had impacted my life in the positive way before I didn’t share those views again whey birthday since . For my son I have written and had others contribute to what will be a bound book for stories moments and treasures for his late father , from those he may never have the chance to ask or relise existed at this period in his life both children are 3 . This week has been wonderfully challenging too and 3 year old tantrums are just getting bigger ! Good luck with both ur challenges I’m told it gets better !

    • Kel says:

Wow, Cheryle. Not sure I could have managed a letter in the middle of Ella’s birth. It went way too quickly!! 🙂
I love the idea of the bound book. How wonderful. That’s something he will no doubt cherish forever. xx

  5. Dannie says:

What a beautiful letter 🙂 I also had a keepsake box for all my kids as well.
I gave my son his for his 18th this year (well sent it to him) and he said it was the best gift he had ever recieved! xx
Thanks again for your wonderful words:-) xxx

    • Kel says:

I love that idea, Dannie – to give it to them on their 18th birthday. It’s simple things like that which mean so much more than the material stuff (even to teenagers!!).
All the best with your letter too. xxx

  6. Tat says:

What a sweet letter! I’ve been meaning to do this, too, but I wish I was a more dedicated letter writer…

    • Kel says:

Thanks, Tat. It’s not something I’d ever considered doing. It was actually the bloke in The Shed who suggested we do it. So glad we did. 🙂

  7. Glowless says:

Beautiful Kelley. I’m hoping to combine all my Letters to Tricky in to a bound book for him one day – partly for him and partly for me, so I can read them when I’m at a low point and get a lift just like you have 🙂

    • Kel says:

That’s a beautiful idea, Glowless. It’s amazing what sort of an impact they have on you, isn’t it?
I read one of your letters to Tricky in a previous FYBF. It was really beautiful. I wish I had started writing regular letters for Ella. Unfortunately, we’ve only ever done this one. Mind you, it’s never too late to start, I guess… 🙂

  8. Veronica says:

    That is so beautiful.

  9. Miss Pink says:

Beautiful letter. She will love it when she is older.

  10. Oh you have me in tears, what a beautiful letter for your daughter to read when she is older.

    Rewinding with Multiple Mum

  11. MultipleMum says:

I always wanted to be the sort of Mum who wrote letters to her children… never quite happened that way! Good on you for writing this lovely letter and for (re) finding it at a time that it made a real difference to your thought patterns. Thanks for Rewinding x

    • Kel says:

It was nice to go back and read it all again yesterday thanks to your linky too. I seem to be led to this letter/post every time I have a rough week. So BIG thanks to you. xx

  12. Alison says:

What a lovely letter. My girl is nearly 16, the years pass so fast. I never kept a keepsake box but I have kept a scrapbook filled with memories of family and friends she can look back at.
Sharing from the weekend rewind. xxx

    • Kel says:

I love the scrapbook idea, Alison. That’s brilliant. I might even look at doing something like that for the girls. Thank you. 🙂

  13. Karen says:

It’s good to have reminders of why we do this parenting gig. I find myself looking at baby photos when I’m feeling despondent.
How lovely that your girl will have this letter to come back to, a reminder of your love for her.
    Visiting from Rewind.

    • Kel says:

Oh yes, Karen, baby photos have much the same effect for me too. Although, most of them are in the laptop and not in books (something I really should do). 🙂
