The victim of my negligence.

IT IS with (dis)honour I accepted the award for Worst Parent of the Week. At the awards ceremony, I donned a beautiful blue pair of trackies, gorgeous white tracksuit top with Bolognese stain on the front and a dainty little pair of tan-coloured ugg boots with scuffed toes.

Today, I’d like to share my acceptance speech for the award and share the “Things I Know’’:

Thank you. Thank you. Please, you can all sit down now. I accept this, the Worst Parent of the Week award. Firstly, I’d like to thank my total negligence. If not for that one moment of distraction this week and my fast-paced eight-month-old daughter, Baby Holly, slipping through my arms and falling off my bed onto the floor, I wouldn’t be here tonight.

There were tears. Mainly from me. And The Bloke in The Shed – who was on the other end of the phone at the time of the accident. That was the “distraction’’ part. If he didn’t have hearing problems before, he certainly does now. This is aside from the selective hearing, which miraculously appeared about 18 months into our relationship.

I know the guilt I felt at the moment she hit the floor has yet to leave me. I know this will not be the last time I will feel this guilt, nor see her tears. I know that there’s a reason the progress we were making on her saying the word “mum’’ has now stagnated. I know that I’m sure to receive this award again – although I’d rather not. So thank you. I know that I deserve this award as a reminder to be a better parent. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to find a toilet cubicle to have a little cry – it has free “tissues’’.

I’m linking up with Shae from Yay For Home‘s Things I Know meme.

  1. Krys says:

Yeah, but you caught her on the first bounce, so are you still eligible for the award?

  2. Aaaaw I didn’t get any award the first few times I nearly killed the kids LOL Ahh it really is the crappiest feeling though, hope you forge about it quickly – Baby Holly surely has!

    • Kel says:

Thanks Leah. Sorry to hear you went through all that heartache and didn’t pick up an award for your effort. Ripped off! More than happy to pass mine on if you’d like it for the pool room! LOL! 😉

  3. Mrs M says:

Oooh this happened to me a few weeks ago too. We were in the Museum of Contemporary Art and I tried to put my 18 month old on my shoulders but he slipped and came crashing to the ground. It’s a horrible horrible feeling. I blogged about it to. I was surprised how emotional I got.

I hope you feel better soon.

    Love & stuff
    Mrs M

You need to come over and read my post today about forgiving yourself 🙂
Oh lovely – so been there. All part of being a mother and why this ride is so hard. You are not alone and are doing an awesome job keeping up the the cherubs and hubby’s new work role. Be a little kinder on yourself. You sure deserve it. Big hugs to you. n x

    • Kel says:

Thanks so much, Naomi. That’s nice to hear. You always know how to make a girl feel better.
Have your post open ready to read. xx

  5. When My baby was a few months old i lay her in the middle of my bed whilst i brushed my hair, she couldn’t roll, wasn’t even old enough to move, but somehow she managed to end up on the floor. I was in the room, i had lay her on that queen sized bed so many times before. I was too scared to pick her up incase any damage had been done. You are NOT the worst parent of the week. You need to forgive yourself. It was an accident. Big hugs to you xxx

    • Kel says:

Thanks Lil. So hard to get rid of that guilt feeling though, isn’t it? But these little bubs are tougher than we give them credit for. Thanks so much for your kind words. So nice to hear I’m not alone!! xx

  6. Ohhhh such a horrible feeling. My baby fell off our (quite high) bed this week too (onto floorboards) and it was sickening. They are quick and slippery!

    • Kel says:

Indeed they are, Kate. The more mobile they become, the quicker they get! Lucky they’re tough little things though! Hope your little one is fine too! xx

  7. Aww. Both my girls fell out of our bed – Ellie did so numerous times. James started telling me I was THROWING them out! I know that feeling. I also know baby Holly will be fine. She’ll forget and soon you’ll be changing your name from ‘mum’ to something nobody can say (I did this today).

    • Kel says:

LOL!! Oh dear, it gets bad when hubs starts making those comments!! hehe!!
But you’re right. Baby Holly is all fine and has mos likely forgotten about it by now! Me on the other hand…. 😉

  8. Grace says:

Oh dear…I reckon I’m next runner up for this award.

Little N fell off the slide right in front of me this morning…of course I was too busy taking photos of the other toddlers at Playgroup.

    “Bad parent, bad parent..”

    Happy Friday 🙂

    • Kel says:

LOL!! Oh no, Grace. Have to say I’m heartened by all these tales from fellow mums. Hugs to you (oh, and Little N)!! xx

  9. Mother Duck says:

Well I think there are quite a few of eligible for that award. My baby has fallen off my bed before too. Rest assured you’re not alone but that doesn’t take away the mother guilt does it?!

    • Kel says:

Agree MD, that it is nice hearing about everyone else’s tales. But yes, still finding it hard to get rid of the mother guilt!! Thanks for your comments. xx

  10. Princess Kel forgets I actually dropped Ella on her head as a young un while walking to beach with her in my arms. Didn’t see a pothole I stepped into. Ella has survived and thrived and doesn’t even remember (it might have been as a result of the concussion ………just kidding). You’re a great mum Kel. Don’t sweat it.

  11. Oh how I hate that feeling! I truly know that feeling! I think you might need to share that award around a bit!

Today I was worried by son wouldn’t smile back at me because I lost it last night (badly). He did eventually which was comforting but I chose not to coax it out of him and when he did it was a genuine beam. Then he shat his pants and got it everywhere. So there you have it. noice.

    • Kel says:

LOL! Oh Gemma, that’s too funny. Thanks for making me laugh! And I smiled at the fact he gave you a genuine “beam” without coaxing. They forgive pretty easily these little ones. xx

  12. Elisha says:

Im sorry Kel but this award is mine – I can guarantee every week i do something to earn it and i dont think you can steal it !! I think Emily was 2 days old when i stabbed her with my fingernail resulting in lots of blood and lots of tears ( mine not hers ) One thing i have learnt over the years is children DO bounce , and they DO get over it, and little Holly will be saying Mum and loving you just as much as she always did before you even know it ! The thing about parenting is we learn as we go , we will make mistakes, they will pay for them ultimately and in return we simply plod along and do the best job we know how to do ! I think your a wonderful mum, and the love you have for your girls is clear in every post on this blog – I do hope you are saving them to put in a BIG journal they can look back on when they fully appreciate you ( approx 30 years old and mother themselves ) – Chin up Cherub ! ! Its all good =)

    • Kel says:

Sounds like they’re going to have to make some duplicate copies of the award, Elisha. LOL!
Done the fingernail thing a thousand times to both girls (the downside of having long nails, I guess). You’re quite right, we will make mistakes. We are only human, after all! And thanks for the kind words. Those same words can be applied to you too. xx

  13. This award may have to be shared! My son was in his walker this afternoon, and I was playing the Tickle and Run game with him. I tickled, and he ran – headfirst into our dining table.
I told him he could bite me or something as payback.

Lucky they’re made of rubber, hey?

    • Kel says:

Ouch! The running into the dining table AND biting you back!!! LOL!
Yes, they’re definitely made of rubber. They get over these things far quicker than we do! Hope your bite has healed!! hehe!! 😉

  14. Trish says:

Been there done worst too.Glad she is ok and you know you will be too.

I broke my son’s leg by my stupidity.

    • Kel says:

Oh dear, Trish. That takes the term “break a leg” to a new level! hehe! 🙂
And yes, she’s happily been playing since, so there’s definitely been nothing to worry about.

  15. melanie w says:

Oh Kel this has happen to every mum and the mum guilt is an enormous weight to bare but we give it to ourselves and carry it long after everyone else has forgotten why are us mums such guilt hoarders why do we do it to ourselves? we should all make an effort to just let the guilt go and not be so hard on ourselves lets start together kel :0)

    • Kel says:

Sounds like a great plan, Melanie. You’re so right that it’s only us who have the problem. Everyone else has usually moved on. Words to live by, definitely! Thanks. xx

  16. Shae says:

I know that if my three have survived yours will too 😉
