IF YOU think teaching a three-year-old can be frustrating, just wait ‘til that three-year-old tries to teach you sign language. Some of you would have already seen the video of Ella teaching me Auslan. And I’ve mentioned her patronising response of: “Good girl, Mum. That’s really wonderful. You’re doing a great job’’.

Her latest lesson came while she was sitting on the toilet doing her business one night. Out of the blue, she came out with “Daddy, I love you’’ and “Mummy, I love you’’. If she hadn’t been sitting on the dunny, that moment might well have melted hearts.

Rather enthusiastic with my newfound signs, we jumped on the laptop the next day to learn more via the Auslan signbank. Ella pointed at a few words, saying “Mum, let’s do that one’’. Let’s just say every word she seemed to pick was far from kid-friendly. Try booze, boobs and a devise for smoking illegal drugs. However, there was one I just couldn’t resist teaching her. You’ll have to see the video to find out.

Yes, I’m sure her child carer will thank me for that one. Tomorrow I’ll have a video of her signing and singing to The Owl and the Pussy Cat.

Does your child know another language – even if it’s Dora’s Spanish?

Ella is so clever, thats amazing!

    • Kel says:

I’m learning so much from her.
Just before recording this she was being her usual loud self and showing off as she was practising it, then as soon as I turned the camera on she decided to be shy! 🙂

Kellie, James and Ryan have made me play this over and over, they now know Ella and wanted me to show them pics of Ella’s Mum and Dad and little sister, they just loved it. Great way for them to get to know Tassie relies Hey!

    • Kel says:

Most definitely! That’s so nice to hear, Maggie. The power of technology!
They’ll love tomorrow’s video of Ella singing and signing at the same time! x

  3. Oh Kel that is so cute and so smart! Hmmm another language…no, not unless you count shaking her head at me when I ask her to do something! lol

  4. Tutu Ames says:

    Aww… adorable!

  5. Moodi Mumma says:

Awesome!! She is adorable 🙂 My girls are asking me to play this again lol

  6. Moodi Mumma says:

Hehe did she whisper “pardon me” when doing stinky breath? Love this x

    • Kel says:

LOL! I didn’t think anyone would pick that up. But yes!!!
Funnily, when she usually does “stinky breath”, she shouts it out and does the signing rather confidently. At least I’ve learnt that when I want her to tone it down a bit, I can just turn on the camera!! 😉

  7. How clever is your little girl! amazing!

  8. This is too cute and she’s so clever. I wanted to do baby sign with my girls but somehow it never went far.
I am thinking of trying again with Jasper to help him communicate with us since Ellie tends to speak for everyone!

    • Kel says:

Same here, Becky. I’ve taught Baby Holly a couple of things – food, drink etc (all the important stuff. LOL!). But I’d love to teach her more.

too cute! I learnt sign language as a child, from my friend. and then as an adult when to a class to learn more. And then forgot most of it because I had no one to “talk” to.

Millar speaks Dora’s spanish and also can count to 5 in Maori. I will definitely teach him more.

    • Kel says:

Wow, that’s really impressive – on both your parts. I don’t remember learning any languages as a child. Not until high school anyway, and then the only option was Indonesian!
You’ve got to love Dora for teaching kids Spanish! 🙂

  10. Kirrily says:

That is so fantastic, good on her!

  11. that is really special. What a gorgeous girl.

    oh stinky breath! too funny!

  12. Jess Newman says:

That’s great! We have always taught our kids the basics of please, thank you, all done before they could talk, but I’ve left it there. This would be a great thing to teach. Can you recommend some resources?

  13. that is so great!! What a beautiful clever little girl. My little girl just asked what she was doing. Looks like we might be visiting that site. 🙂

    • Kel says:

Hehe!! It’s a great site. Well worth a visit. And the addition of short videos means you can pick it up pretty quickly yourself. Have fun! 🙂
