I KNOW that you’ve all been waiting for the follow up post to the grand doll house. You know, the one where I promised the equally grand doll furniture? Well, the wait is over. Brace yourselves – this post features furniture that even Harvey Norman would be happy to house. Prices will never be slashes on these little beauties.

Before unveiling the wonderful individual creations we made yesterday, there are a few things I know I learnt and want to share.

  • I know I forgot an oven. Maybe it was a subconscious thing, because cooking dinner conjures up images of witching / arsenic / feral hour.
  • I know that while you left beautiful comments on the grand doll house post (for which I was very grateful), you were surely humouring me when you said you liked the beer carton version. Right?
  • I know I have a creative daughter. Despite being quite ill yesterday and wanting to just watch mummy make the furniture for her to play with, she did manage to make a car – unprompted and without assistance.

  • I know this project would have been great for product placement. Now there’s an idea for brands!

So, I know that about now you’re itching to find out how to make the furniture. So here goes:

  • Take an egg carton and a used toilet roll

  • Cut out two of the cups from the egg carton and cover in coloured paper to make chairs. Cut the toilet roll in half and glue to a circle to make a table. We used a piece of foam from a craft bucket.

  • Take a rectangle box (see the product placement photo) and open one end so the flaps become a bed head and bedside drawers. Cover with a piece of decorated paper for a bedspread. Fold paper over a straight piece of egg carton for a pillow.

  • Take another rectangle box.

  • Cover it in paper and draw on a sink, taps, cupboards and drawers.

  • Use a Kinder Surprise toy container for a… loo. Yes, we don’t have an oven, but we have a dunny. And it’s in the bedroom. Let’s hope bowel movements happen in the mornings.

  • Positioned right where people can see through the window. Classy.

  • Assemble it all into the house and… ta da! Fit for a princess… who probably just wants to curl up in the bed right now and sleep. Poor little girl.

Does your child have a doll house – made or bought? Or maybe one of those cool two-storey car parks with a ramp?

Great furnitures, and I think my Miss 4 has made a very similar car (although we had to have seatbelts buy poking bits of wool through the corners of the seat with a needle).

We have a bought dolls house, with wooden furniture. It was a must buy for me as I had one, lovingly made by my Poppy 🙂

    • Kel says:

What a fabulous idea with the seatbelts. And the fact your Miss 4 is safety conscious enough to think of them. Good on her! We may need to make a few additions to Ella’s now!!! 😉
I love hearing about the doll’s houses mums had as kids. I’m sure it meant so much more to you because your Poppy made it for you too. x

  2. Oh wow!
    How creative are you. 🙂

  3. Di says:

That is great. Olive has a dolls house (on loan from her big cousin) but no furniture. I kept meaning to get some….. My mum made us furniture out of match boxes when we were kids. Its funny – don’t seem to go through many matchboxes these days.

    • Kel says:

Oh yes, we used to make all sorts of things out of match boxes. They were the best size for doll’s furniture. With very few smokers now and wood heaters all but gone, there’s not much use for the ol’ match tjhese days!! 🙂

  4. Love it! Awesome efforts, my big girl would love doing this 🙂

Hope your babes are much better very soon xox.

  5. Toni says:

I LOVE it! She’s a lucky Princess! Especially love the loo-with-a-view, finally a use for Kinder eggs.

My Princess has a Sylvanian Families house but she insists on calling it her Salvation Dolls House so I guess she’s safe from sin for a while?

    • Kel says:

Oh Toni, the Salvation Dolls House is hilarious! Love that! I’ve seen the Sylvanian Families house on the TV ads. They look really impressive.
      And yes, who doesn’t love a loo-with-a-view! 😉

  6. Love it! My kids have a wooden dolls house, but still love to make them out of cardboard. And the great thing about cardboard is that when you have had enough of it, you can easily recycle it!

    • Kel says:

So true, Jo. This doll’s house will probably be “recycled” into something else later on as well!
I’d love to get Ella and Holly a wooden dolls house down the track. Would be far more impressive than the cardboard one, anyway! 🙂

  7. So cute and adorable! I have a secret dolls house obsession, I really want one of those huge American style ones

  8. That is so cool. Love a loo with a view!

  9. Nee says:

Nice work! I still stand by my admiration of the beer carton version though 😉

  10. MummyK says:

Omg so crafty!! I’ll copy this one 🙂

  11. Love it!!! This is so up my alley (so to speak). We collect all of our boxes and little containers so the girls can go silly making stuff. This is fabulous work. Harvey Norman eat your heart out :O)

  12. Rhianna says:

super super cool! I missed the dolls house post so off to check that out as well. Talk about great ideas 🙂

  13. Jayne says:

That’s so cool. My 6 yo has a currently very underused dolls house, bought from the op shop a couple of years ago. i keep meaning to ‘reno’ it, but never get around to it. This could be a good school holiday project for the three of us (10 yo too) 🙂

  14. […] playing! During the weekend, we’ll be attempting to make some furniture for the Little Princess who has taken up residence in the grand doll’s house. Do your children play with boxes? What […]

  15. Jackie says:

Wonderful suggestions. You are so creative.I’ll try to surprise my little daughter this weekend by making some “piece of furniture” for doll’s house.

    • Kel says:

Oh, how lovely would it be to surprise her with that, Jackie! I’d love to have had some homemade play furniture as a child! Hope she enjoys it! x

  16. Yeran says:

OMG you have done such a great job!!! Much better than some fancy pants bought version!

  17. Grace says:

Wow! So, so, so cool !
Who needs an oven when you’ve got a loo as awesome as that ??? 🙂

  18. Love it! I was actually in Harvey Norman this week, and I agree – your furniture is way better 😉
Hope your little princess is feeling better soon!
    x

    • Kel says:

Thanks Kellie. I can see Mr Harvey heading this way now. I’m sure he’ll have designs on that stellar loo! Harvey Norman don’t have a plumbing section. Now there’s an idea! 🙂

  19. Love it! Even *I* could do this. hehe.

    • Kel says:

Oh, it was so simple Tina, and waaaayyy too much fun! The beauty of kids is you get to relive your childhood all over again!! Hehe!! 🙂

  20. katepickle says:

oooh cool furniture… love the dunny! LOL
We have two gorgeous hand made doll’s houses that my father made for my girls, and one of those two story garages with ramps and lift, and a tree house dolls house…. but we have precious little furniture! But I have no excuse not to get crafty now!

    • Kel says:

The handmade doll’s houses sound wonderful, Kate. There’s nothing better than something made from a loved one. And I’m super jealous of the two-storey garage!!
Can’t wait to hear how you go with the furniture!! 🙂

  21. Photographer-Mum says:

Omg, that toilet through the window is just hilarious! Love it!!
