IN A bid to help ward off winter bugs, I’ve been pulling out the big guns every second night. Yes, my weapons of choice during those nightly Masterchef moments are one of these:

garlic

Garlic

and one of these:

onion

Onion

Don’t mess with me colds and flus. You’ll only come off second best.

Will these two be featuring in your meal tonight?

  1. We use garlic and onion in almost every meal.
My little guys fav food at the moment is Garlic butter on hot toast.

This year it doesn’t seem to matter how much garlic we eat the colds just keep coming.

    • Kel says:

Ooh, garlic butter on toast is yum! So great when the kids love it too.
I agree. Even the best immune building foods don’t seem to be keeping colds at bay this year! 🙂

  2. I’ve been putting garlic in everything too lately 🙂

  3. Moodi Mumma says:

Mmm I love cooking with Garlic and Onion :o) Happy WW xox

  4. Trish says:

    Oh no not you too.
    Happy WW.
Thanks for your comment and linking up. Such a beautiful image of the garlic

    • Kel says:

Thanks Trish. Was fun to play around with photographing food rather than kids for a change!!! LOL! 😉
Hope the sniffles don’t hang around your house too long! x

  5. Hope it helps! The flu and cold bugs seem to be horrible this year! Great pics aswell. Love the garlic one 🙂 Happy WW!

  6. Emma says:

I had a small dose of a cold at the start of winter but (touch wood) have escaped sickness since. Garlic and onion are definitely a good idea, though.
Hope they keep the lurgies at bay at your place 🙂

    • Kel says:

So far, so good, Emma. I think all that garlic is working. We had spaghetti bolognese last night, so we’ve all had a big hit to do us for two days!! hehe!! 😉

  7. Skyelee says:

These two are staples in my cooking, I can get my onions chopped without crying!
May have helped ward of the colds this winter but not the gastro 🙁 Happy W.W!

    • Kel says:

Oh no, Skyelee. Gastro is not fun at all. Fingers crossed, we’ve avoided it this year, but had a bad run with it last year (pardon the pun!).

  8. georgi says:

yes, lots of garlic recently! I really like roasting it in the oven with onions and some vegetables then making that into a pasta sauce .. makes the garlic flavour more smoky and less obvious. x

  9. Ash says:

Must get me some more garlic! Will’s favourite thing is garlic bread! There are some great ideas in the comments here!

    • Kel says:

There sure are, Ash. We planted a bit of garlic last year and ended up with the most incredible crop. Thankfully it lasts well.

  10. Grace says:

I use a generous serve of each in EVERYTHING ! Without them, I just think food tastes bland…although my breath is something to be well clear off 🙂

  11. Gemma says:

you can never have too much garlic and onion!

  12. Caz says:

I love garlic and onions. And yes – great for winter colds too. But for some reason this winter they really haven’t helped ….. been a bad winter for cold and flu.

    • Kel says:

You’re right there, Caz. We seem to have one cold on top of the other lately. Although, (touch wood) we’re cold and flu free right at the minute!

  13. Tat says:

Love your weapons… When I send my husband to the shops with a request to buy onion, he usually comes back with one onion! So we always run out.

    • Kel says:

LOL!! Oh dear, Tat. We grew the garlic and onions. We had a mass crop of garlic, but not a huge amount of onions. Was nice to be able to eat something out of the garden for a change.

  14. Missy Boo says:

Some garlic made it into our meal tonight (the last of the rainbow trout we caught). Hope your weapons work!

    • Kel says:

It’s been so long since I’ve had rainbow trout. Yum! As kids we spent most of our weekends in Tasmania’s lakes area fishing, so trout was a bit of a staple. And yes, so far so good on the colds front! 🙂

  15. Cathy says:

love the smell of garlic…although I’m not so sure I should be admitting to that 🙂

    • Kel says:

I totally agree, Cathy. There’s nothing better than walking into a room where garlic is being cooked. Later, on your breath, not so good!!! 😉

  16. Smart idea, good weapons!

  17. Veronica says:

I came back from Melbourne with a lurgy, so we’ve had A LOT of garlic being used here. I also love cider vinegar and honey in warm water for sore throats and cold-y feelings.

    • Kel says:

Oh, that’s no good, Veronica. After reading your post earlier about cidar vinegar and honey, I still haven’t been able to come at the idea!! Hehe!
Hope that cold moves on quickly for you! xx
