top 5 Mentally Sexy Dad competitionCOVERED in tiny tomato handprints on his once-crisp T-shirt, The Bloke in The Shed returned from his Father’s Day lunch today to the news he’d been announced a top 5 Mentally Sexy Dad for 2011 from 73 entries. He was more than a little chuffed.  Partly because it’s such a wonderful accolade for Dads who strive to do what is best for their families. Partly because he just scored himself an Animal Dyson Vacuum Cleaner, valued at $949. A new gadget in the house means that takes care of the vacuuming for me for a while now.

I have to say I was super proud of him. We’ve known he was mentally sexy for a long time now, but it’s nice others have recognised that. And by others, I mean some fairly big Aussie names. The competition is organised by the fabulous Clint from Reservoir Dad and was this year judged by the girls from Channel 10’s The Circle (Yumi, Denise, Chrissie and Georgi), world-renowned psychologist Steve Biddulph, mamamia.com.au columnist Kate Hunter and Melbourne’s Sunday Age columnist Maureen Matthews.

I entered The Bloke in the competition not thinking anything much would come of it. Especially because I wrote it while extremely sleep deprived one night. I wondered at the time if it even made sense. Here’s an excerpt of the entry:

“Julian can move faster than a speeding MixMaster, is more powerful than his favourite brand of toilet cleaner and can leap tall piles of toys in a single bound (and pack them away afterwards). But he’s no Incredible Hulk (probably more a Shrek). He’s definitely no Superman (he’s too fashion conscious to wear undies on the outside). And you wouldn’t mistake him for Spider-Man (he squeals like a girl at the sight of creepy crawlies).

In all honesty, to us he’s just Julian. A husband. A friend. And most importantly, to his two blessed girls, a truly Mentally Sexy Dad who always puts them first.’’

You can read the full entry on Reservoir Dad’s site and check out the other fabulous dads in the top 5. The winner will be announced this coming Sunday, September 11.
