girl smiling looking away

Getting Princess Ella's attention yesterday for an interview was... challenging.

WEEK three of Naomi of Seven Cherubs’ Cherish Your Cherubs project is to interview your child/dren. It follows Week 1: Record and Week 2: Remember. My day job, when I’m not wiping bums and faces, is a journalist and PR consultant. So you’d think I’d be OK with this one. Think again.

I’ve been blessed to chat to all manner of people from big name musicians to TV and film stars and comedians. None of them compare to the diva that is Princess Ella. After discovering the hidden dictaphone, she even went on to demand a rider with orange juice and blue M&Ms. Well, maybe not.

I had every intention of uploading the audio from my dictaphone for you all to hear, but it took six goes to get the transcript below and I’m sure you don’t want to sit through ALL that. So, here’s the edited version of the interview conducted while overlooking a Father’s Day card she made at childcare (aka “school’’):

Kel: What was your favourite part of Father’s Day?

Ella: (screams) The PRESENTS. And the cupcake.

Kel: Did you know your Dad was named in the top 5 Mentally Sexy Dads today? What do you think about that?

Ella: (shyly) Good.

I explain how special it is that others now know what we’ve always known about him. Oh, and that it also now means he’s won a special new Dyson vacuum.

Ella: (excitement becomes too much) Woohoo!

Kel: Are you going to use it?

Ella: Yessssss!! (jumps up and down as if she’s just scored herself a new toy. If only she’d have the same amount of enthusiasm for a vacuum in a few years time).

Kel: What do you love most about your dad?

Ella: I love to have kisses with him and cuddles. He’s good at playing Snap and pass the parcel.

Kel (looking over the Father’s Day cards she made): What’s your favourite colour?

Ella: (points at the card) That colour, that colour and that colour.

Kel: Haven’t you been doing colours at school?

Ella: Yes. (Does Auslan sign language for pink and for purple. This is a good segway into emotions, which she’s also learnt through Auslan)

Kel: What makes you sad?

Ella: When I crash on something.

Kel: What makes you angry?

Ella: When Daddy talks on the phone and he doesn’t hear me.

Kel: What makes you happy?

Ella: When daddy doesn’t talk.

Kel: What makes you giggle?

Ella: My party.

Kel: What party?

Ella: My party that I had the other day with Nanny and Poppy and Molly. (She means her birthday 10 months ago. Yes, it’s fair to say she’s already counting down the days ’til the next one).

I hope no one uses this interview as the basis for employing me into the future!

What funny things do your children say?

  1. hehe. such a cutie.
    Loving her answers. x

    • Kel says:

Oh, it was such a challenge to get even that. I have about an hour of absolute nonsense and giggling! I wish she hadn’t noticed the dictaphone and I might have got more sense out of her!!! LOL! 🙂

  2. Firstly, congratulations to the bloke in the shed. Well done!
I love how she talks about her party as if it was yesterday. CrashGirl does the same thing!

    • Kel says:

Thanks for the congrats, Laney. There’s been lots of excitement since we heard the news!
Funny how they have little concept of time, isn’t it? It makes me laugh!! She has all these plans for her birthday already, including the cake, the presents and the party! 🙂

  3. Ella is a real sweetheart. She did well. My three year old boy’s answer were all about food! lol Everything in the past for Angus is ‘last night’ and everything in the future is ‘tomorrow’. My girls try to explain time to him but to no avail at the moment. Congrats to your bloke in the shed!.

    • Kel says:

Hehe!! That’s so cute, Melanie. Ella did have quite an emphasis on the cupcakes for a while there, but that part of the interview was heavily edited! LOL!
I love how they have no concept of time. Ella always talks about how she’ll do so-and-so “on Saturday”. 😉

  4. nellbe says:

Oh what a great interview! Congrats to Hubby too, well done!!

  5. ROFL 😀 That’s hilarious!! I love how little kids can remember something from months ago like it was only yesterday and yet, they can’t actually remember what happened yesterday.

  6. Nathalie says:

That was so funny & delightful to read. I’m grinning from ear to ear.
    Well done hubby 🙂

  7. Nee says:

Yay for you snagging a mentally sexy hubby (oh & I guess yay for him too!) I’m super jealous about the dyson. Princess Ella sounds like she’s got the diva business sorted & has you both wrapped around her little finger 😉

    • Kel says:

Hehe!! I know, how lucky are we? Our very first Dyson!!
And yes, she most certainly does have us wrapped around her little finger. Without a doubt, Nee! 😉

  8. Sif says:

What a cutie! Love the party the other day, 10 months ago! What’s the relevance of time when you’re a princess? LOL! Too funny that she’s happy when daddy doesn’t talk!

    • Kel says:

Oh exactly, Sif! One month, 10 months… what’s the difference? Hehe!
And yes, Daddy has to bring work home quite a bit, which means lots of talking on his phone. Much to Ella’s disgust!! 😉

  9. Caz says:

    That’s just beautiful Kellie!!!

  10. Naomi Ellis says:

Totally gorgeous interview. My favourite is when she said that what makes her happy is when Daddy does not talk. Too funny! Big congrats to daddy by the way on winning a wonderful Dyson to use around your house. Thanks so much for linking up and I love that you can put those journalist skills to great work at home. N x

    • Kel says:

Yes, out of the mouths of babes! Poor Daddy. He brings work home so he can see more of the girls, but in turn it means he gets in trouble for needing to talk on the phone!!
Plus, now he has another reason to be home more – lots of vacuuming!! Hehe! 😉

  11. Jayne says:

Yay for Ella’s dad! Ella sounds like such a sweetie. May her joy for vacuuming never wane! (until she leaves home at least ;)) 🙂

  12. Jayne says:

Ahhh, she’s absolutely adorable! Those are such cute answers.

Milk the vacuuming thing while it lasts.

  13. heehee what party… cracked me up Miss M starts the birthday count down the day after her birthday lol

    • Kel says:

Oh yes, same in our house. She also counts down to everyone else’s birthday. And everyone has to have a birthday cake and a party, of course!! Hehe!! 🙂

  14. Haha she is just such a cutie! It’s so difficult to get them to answer questions isn’t it!

  15. Martine says:

Too cute and well done hubby! Love that she enjoyed her party so much and funny their concept of time!

    • Kel says:

It always makes me laugh. She said today she wanted to go “back to that hotel we went to the other day a few months back”. Hmmm, right! Hehe! 🙂

  16. Lisa Wood says:

How cute is that! I love her down to earh answers and how much her Dad means to her world – and that her party was the best (even if it was 10 months ago!!!)
I think that is a top notch interview – maybe Ella will be a writer one day and she look back at this post and say “this is what gave me the inspiration” !!! Or she could be a journalist 🙂

Its so funny what kids say – my youngest is so funny with the things he comes up with! So wished I had thought to write down funny sayings my kids said over the years- it would have made a great book:)

    Cheers
    Lisa

    • Kel says:

Ooh, Ella becoming a journo makes her Dad and I very nervous, Lisa!! LOL! No, it wouldn’t be a bad thing, I guess.
And I agree on writing down the funny things they say. I guess that’s where the blog is coming in handy. I might be able to put this all into a book for her one day! 🙂

  17. Cat says:

Truly adorable! I’ve started writing down the funny things the Bebito says in a journal because they’re absolutely hilarious and I forget them. Last night at dinner he announced to my Mum and I, “Oh dear! I’m finding it SO HARD to concentrate” as he dramatically put his hands to his head.

    • Kel says:

LOL!! Oh, that is too funny, Cat!
I love that you’re writing them down. That’s great! I guess I’m using the blog as my journal! But I’d also love to make a book of her little sayings to present to her one day in the future too. 🙂

  18. Being good at Snap is a very good skill in life to have! Especially if it makes you popular with kids! So glad you have this special man in your life and family, Kel.

    • Kel says:

Oh yes, I’m super popular when the Snap cards come out, Lina! Hehe!!
I am pretty blessed with a great husband and dad to the girls, indeed. x

  19. Gorgeous! I love that he is good at playing snap and pass the parcel – gold star there! LOL

    Nicole x
