My pink baby, Holly

THIS is a post from the archives. However, it’s a question Princess Ella still asks now, so I thought it might give you all a giggle.

‘’MUM, can we take Holly back and get a boy one?’’

When Princess Ella uttered these words last week, my body went stiff, like someone had jabbed me with the oxytocin needle again to expel the placenta.

My answer? No way.

It’s not because of all the months of chasing my husband around the bedroom like a cheetah chases a limping gazelle (yes, remember that scene from the Mum’s The Word column?).

Nor because of the spewing in those early months of being up the duff, that reminds me of how I used to spend New Year’s Eve.

It also has nothing to do with feeling like an ant pushing out an elephant at the final hurdle. OK, so maybe it has just a little something to do with that last bit.

No, the real reason is I’m quite partial to pink. Or, more correctly, I’ve got no idea how you go about dealing with boy bits. Yeah, yeah, I know, I’ve been preggers twice, so I must have some idea.

Princess Ella, on the other hand, seems to have a real fascination with ‘’scoody doodies’’ – her term, not ours. Apparently her friend Harry at child care has a scoody doodie.

‘’But he’s only got a little scoody doodie,’’ she says. Note: Harry is not his real name in fear of bruising the pride of his father.

For the record, girls, it’s been determined, have ‘’front bottoms’’. Oh, how boring. We’ve already got one bottom. No wonder she wants a brother.

So, what about you? Are you more partial to pink or blue? And what names have your children given their (usually not so) private bits?

  1. 😆 When we first found out Abi was going to be a girl Erin through a tantrum because she only wanted to be a “boy sister” (or else she wanted a puppy). As far as what other bits are called…nothing really. What age do they usually start calling them names??

LOL! That’s classic Bec. Ella’s just turned three and has suddenly become fascinated with girl and boy bits. Wondering if it might be a result of the communal bathroom at child care! Apparently, it’s a popular hang out… Gawd, imagine, in another few years it’ll be behind the bike shed… 🙂

Ah!! This is what I’m most nervous about… only the opposite! I did the boy thing and its gone GREAT… now I’m having a little girl and I’m getting cold feet! 🙂

Having had only a sister growing up and then becoming a aunty to my niece – I’ve only known girls. When pregnant with my first child I found it weird to think about looking after a child with ‘boy bits’ hehe. I’ve got two girls now so need to worry!

We are looking at calling it a ‘front bottom’ or ‘wee wee’. Would be keen to hear other suggestions.

    • Kel says:

Yes, same Crystal. I know there are some who believe you should call them their correct names right from the start. I’ve actually read a couple of posts on the topic that were really quite good. For us, we feel more comfortable at this stage calling it a front bottom. That may change down the track. x

I’m exactly the same! I grew up in a family of four girls and I just think girls are better! I would like a boy, but at the same time am slightly terrified of having one. And I know if I had to pick between all girls and all boys- it would be girls. I would have been devastated if I never had a daughter. I just think girls seem to belong to you forever, they grow, but they always come back to their Mum’s for advice and for family…. boys tend to go with their wives families. I could be wrong, but that’s the way I think!

    • Kel says:

That’s really interesting, Robyn. I have two aunties with four boys each and they wouldn’t change a thing. I wonder if it comes down to what you’re used to. Maybe we would feel differently if we had boys ourselves. Makes for an interesting discussion! 🙂

As you know it’s all pink here too!! I don’t think my lot would know what to do if we went to the blue side of life. Much explaining to do in years to come 🙂

  6. Lisa Wood says:

I love pink – its my favorite colour – yet I ended up with five blues! Not sure how that happened…when I was in high school and was meant to be doing my school work (yuck!) I used to day dream about little girls. When I got married I thought we would have 3 girls and 3 boys – yet we got five beautiful boys 😉 Funny how life turns out.

We dont have nicknames in our house for girl parts/boy parts – we just call them “Private Parts”

    Cheers
    Lisa

PS – Ella can borrow one of my boys any day – she will soon be surprised with how loud, messy and funny boys are!

    • Kel says:

Hehe! Yes, I think the reality of a brother might be very different for her! Funny, I always imagined I’d have a pigeon pair. In fact, I was convinced. It is funny how life turns out, Lisa. And I’m the same – wouldn’t’t change a thing.

  7. I myself am more partial to blue than pink – I have 5 blue & 2 pink and do love them all so much and wouldnt change any of them for the world…
BUT I just find that I can connect better with the blue and I myself am not a frilly girly girl so this is also something I find hard with pink.

In our house we have privates and willies….

    • Kel says:

That’s really interesting that you connect better with the blues than the pinks. It makes me wonder whether I’d be the same with boys. I’m very much a girly girl!! 🙂

      • girls can be so fussy and finicky in how their hair is done, and the likes.
where as blues don’t really care. shave off their hair and it looks great when nice and short and spikey.
You can throw a pair of jeans, a top and sneakers on a blue and they look great.. try and dress a girl.. omg! it can be a night mare!
I am all pretty much ala natural with me!! I am not into skirts/dresses/make up….
I’ll dye my hair and get the waxing done and yeah….

        • Kel says:

LOL!! Oh, I love that. Sadly, I have to agree!! Getting them dressed is one thing, then there’s the wanting to change outfits all the time!!! Sheesh! 🙂

  8. A Keeper says:

LOL, my girls have been asking for a baby brother or sister, they’re not fussy, just a baby sibling. But no way Jose, what if (heaven forbid) we got a boy!!!!!????!!!! Definitely pink in this house.
