Aussie Giveaway LinkupTHE Bloke in The Shed will today be tackling his first Skilled Burnie Ten – an event dubbed Australia’s premier 10km road race. Yes, it’s no easy feat. He wants we three princesses to be there in case something happens. I assume the “something’’ refers to needing an ambulance. We’ll also likely be doing some huffing and puffing from the sidelines to help create a bit of a tail wind for him. Whatever works.

The race (or walk, in his case) starts at 11.15am if you happen to be in Tasmania’s North West and are looking for something to do. There are also activities throughout Burnie, which I’m hoping will occupy the girls while they endure the long wait for their Dad to cross the finish line. In all seriousness, we do wish him all the best.

The race will also be a chance for him to work off yesterday’s birthday cake. Holly’s postponed birthday party finally happened after all the sickness we’ve endured. After running out of eggs on Friday, I had to bake the three cakes late Friday night and then spend yesterday madly assembling and decorating them to create a Princess Castle cake. Here’s the end result:

  1. Hey, we finally had our postponed birthday party too, so like you, I was also up early decorating cake! I’ll post about mine tomorrow. Love your Princess Castle, especially the double cone turrets! My favorite cake creation so far was my Hungry Caterpillar made from cupcakes. If anyone is interested it’s on my blog. Thanks for the link up today Kel 🙂

Going to check out your birthday post today, Laney.
I like the sound of a Hungry Caterpillar cake. What a fab idea!
PS. The bottles had so many comments during the party. Everyone loved them!! 🙂

  2. That is so cute Kel! Well done and I can see Holly loves it! Nom, Nom, Nom.

  3. oh hope baby Holly is all better now! Great cake skills btw~!!

My best cake creation was a Buzz Lightyear spaceship cake for Bubbaroos 1st bday! It was easy, quick and looked great!~ Yay me!!

  4. Love the cake Kellie! Looks like baby Holly loved it too!

I made on just like it for my daughters first birthday. I didn’t use fondant though, I just iced with butter cream and put fairy floss on top.

And I coated the cones in white chocolate and sprinkles

    • Kel says:

The fairy floss inclusion is a good idea, Amy. Must remember that. I saw a few recipes coated the cones in chocolate, but I think it was more about time that stopped me from doing it. Would certainly have made it look more effective though. x

  5. Kylie Ofiu says:

Kellie, the cake looks great! Hope you guys have a fun day and “nothing happens”. 🙂

    • Kel says:

      Thanks Kylie.
And yes, the big race went really well. He crossed the line at one hour and 18 minutes! His first comment was “that was easy”. Looks like he’ll be trying to beat his time next year now! 🙂

  13. Roselle says:

Oh my god. What a cake. AWESOME. Blown away seriously. Too good really. And very nice clicks. Keep up the great work.

  14. Becci says:

Great cake. Sad to say I haven’t attempted a home made birthday cake for the kids since my daughter’s first birthday, and that was a simple farm theme cake. Baking is not my thing. Don’t mind buying a plain cake and dressing it up though! So well done to all you Mums who can.
I was a little too late to join up your linky but you you still have a week to enter at http://beccibird.blogspot.com/2011/09/win-panasonic-rice-cooker-and-2.html

    • Kel says:

Thanks for leaving the link, Becci. Usually the linky is open until Tuesday mornings, but I’ve obviously clicked the wrong date on the closing section. Apologies for that.
And thanks for the kind comments about the cake too. I’m sure any cake you make or decorate would be fabulous in your children’s eyes. x

  15. Lisa Fairbridge says:

That is such a gorgeous cake. The best I could do was when my first born was born I made him a no 1 with balloons floating off it. Unfortunately no photo as it was almost 12 years ago now. I try to make my kids birthday cakes but I am not that good at it. I have to make their very first birthday cake though. Its not a biggie if cakes get bought for them after that but no-one was allowed to buy a first birthday cake for any of my 4 children

    • Kel says:

Hehe! Love the concept of the first one being homemade, Lisa. I don’t think I’d be too fussed if we bought cakes for future parties. Mind you, I did have a bit of fun making this one! I may have a slight cake making addiction now! 😉

  16. Lisa Fairbridge says:

    PS Holly looks so cute!!!

  17. Happy 1st Birthday Holly and congrats on making that Cake Kellie it looks fantastic.
