BREAKFAST has suddenly become a big deal in this house. And I’m not talking about the fact I have breakfast once in the morning and again about 8pm. That’s just normal. Right? The big deal is that when Princess Ella, Li’l Holly and I sit down to breakfast, The Bloke in The Shed now joins us.

Following up Weetbix with toast

We’re going on nine years of marriage and during that time I’ve only seen him eat breakfast a dozen or so times – and it usually involves eggs, bacon and a holiday. So when he started going to a personal trainer to find a thinner version of himself, he came home the first night announcing “apparently I’m not doing myself any favours by skipping breakfast’’. Really? You don’t say. (Sorry, can’t help the sarcasm).

The fact Li’l Holly and I were flown all the way to Adelaide this week for breakfast just shows you how important it is. OK, so the trek was for a Kelloggs Bloggers Brunch, but still. The aim of the event was for Kelloggs to garner input from mums on its brand and breakfast in general.

Three Li'l... on a cereal box!

The breakfast topic for me was the search for a transitional food now Holly has moved from baby rice through to “big girl cereals’’. I had to confess that the princesses have been brought up on a diet of porridge and the cereal that starts with W and ends in X. Well, what other options are there?

At the bloggers brunch, as I was deep in conversation with the hilarious Lucy and fresh from The Morning Show Jodie, a packet of Sultana Bran Buds was pushed under my nose. So I pushed some under Holly’s nose. She devoured the lot. Jus like a snack. While Kelloggs has gained a bad rap (and still is from some corners for its so-called pester power), the company has capped the amount of sugar its new products contain. So, while I’m not advocating eating Coco Pops every morning, some of its newer additions can eradicate early morning mother guilt – or boredom if you’ve been lacking brekky inspiration. Like me.

Breakfast is important. And if I had to choose my final meal, it would be a bowl of cereal. A bowl of Be Natural Pink Lady, Flame Raisin, Fruit Flakes and Clusters cereal to be precise. And, just so you know, Be Natural is part of the Kelloggs stable. That’s a coincidence, I promise.

What generally gets served up at brekkie time in your house – if anything at all? And what would your last meal be?

PS. So sorry, but I didn’t take photos at the event. Something to do with carrying a baby around. But you can see a whole host of gorgeous shots of the mum bloggers and Holly on Flickr. Or you can just visit the blogs of mother to a tribe Tatum, super sweet (without using sugar) Alyce, the girl with the awesome name Kellie,  Kelloggs new product development team member Bianca, all-natural Cat, Super Nanny educated Glowless, too funny for words Georgia and my roomie and inflight entertainment Louisa.

Unfortunately, I can’t eat any breakfast cereals (I’ve tried all types) because they make me gag! But the boys all eat cereal during week days – Weetbix, Ruce Bubbles and Cornflakes are all staples in our house. I don’t buy other, more sugary ones although now that my boys are older they like to sprinkle a little chocolate flavouring on top (so probably less healthy than it used to be)!

As for last meals, I wrote a post about this same thing last week:

I quite like that you just called me your “inflight entertainment”!! The kids are LOVING sultana buds at the moment and thanks to the wonderful Cat from Be Loverly I’ve been adding fresh passionfruit pulp to Bear’s cereal every day and he’s loving it! Nom nom…

    • Kel says:

I like the idea of passionfruit pulp on cereal. Now there’s a reason to use up all that passionfruit pulp in the freezer! I’m hanging out for my Kelloggs parcel to come in the post so the girls can have a try! I’ve been pumping Ella up about the sultana buds!
And yes, you were better than the inflight movies! LOL! 😉

I cannot fathom how anyone can get up in the morning and pour food into their stomachs.
I can’t eat till about 10-ish, and then it’s wholemeal toast and Vegemite (good little Aussie) and another (probably the 3rd) cup of coffee.

My last meal would be… umm… something I had to cook that would take years and years to prepare.

    • Kel says:

We are poles apart in the brekkie department, Toni! LOL! One coffee a day is about all I can stomach. In fact, I don’t think I even had one today. It’s all about tea here!
      🙂

I love my breakfast. Best meal of the day 🙂

I am a Breakfast convert. I used to skip it, but since you can’t skip it with kids, I have now warmed to it and actually can’t go without it. Porridge and weetbix are the 2 foods my kiddo’s will eat anywhere any time. I prefer pizza myself. (not for breakfast though).

    • Kel says:

LOL!! Glad you cleared up the pizza thing, Lisa. 🙂
I think there would only be a handful of days in my life where I’ve missed breakfast. And it’s probably had something to do with alcohol the night before! 😉

I am definitely a breakfast eater. I cannot function in the mornings without it. I am Coeliac so there’s no Kelloggs cereals for me – I have Gluten free mueslis, rice porridge, Gluten free toast, an omelette, or pancakes & fruit.

My kids are like yours – Weetbix and porridge aficianados. They like diced two fruits on top of their cereal.

We buy cornflakes occasionally but to be totally honest, I get the Coles brand ones – cheaper and my kids haven’t complained of any taste difference. If making choc crackles however I always go for the real-deal Rice bubbles – they keep their shape better!

    • Kel says:

Oh, the diced two fruits brings back memories for me, Kathy. We used to have diced two fruits, with Corn Flakes and cream for dessert when we were kids!
Interesting to hear abou the Corn Flakes and Rice Bubbles too. It’s been a while since I’ve made chocolate crackles. Must try them again!

You wouldn’t be surprised there has been at least one night cereal has been served for dinner! Lovely to meet you and the gorgeous Holly x

    • Kel says:

Hehe!! Love that, Bianca. We haven’t reached that point yet, but I’m sure it’s not far off!! 😉
Was so lovely to meet you too. I wish I’d had more time to chat to you. Hopefully it’s not too long before we can catch up again! x

  8. I love breakfast, and I love cereal. My favourite ever was a homemade granola a family friend made in their bakery. I must try and make some, I miss it.

I’ve started eating breakfast recently for the first time in my life in a bid to get my child to eat . A person who can go till 2pm any given day with out ‘Having too ‘ Eat was also doing well for the inner diabetic . I’m a lover of the Apple Muesli whilst my daughter loves porridge something i think i’ll continue to avoid . its nice to finally have half the breakfast time battle now just to fix the other meal times .

    • Kel says:

Wow, Cheryle. You’ve done a good job to turn her around. It’s funny how they mimick what we do though. Good luck on the other meals.
I can’t imagine not eating until 2pm. I would faint! LOL! I think maybe I just love my food too much. 😉

  10. The Be Natural cereal is my favourite too! Reminds me I need to buy a new box. I’m down to the last serve.
