girl eating at pool with seagull

Li'l Holly showing how to make a Vita Wheat magically disappear - if the seagull doesn't get it first

IT STARTED with a tweeted conversation with Romina from Martyrhood. Her children had cracked open the magic kit and were going all David Copperfield on her – minus sawing women in half. That could get the carpet dirty.

It brought back memories of my childhood, torturing my cousins by making their Red Skins and Milk Bottles disappear. I even tweeted “oh, how I would have loved to watch my 12-year-old self trying to make a ball disappear under a cup”. Sadly for Romina, she’d already endured this trick a number of times by her children.

By sheer coincidence, on Christmas Day some of the O’Brien family members had put together a magic show for the rest of us. Ella even got to play the assistant, which primarily required her to stand with her hands on her hips watching the featured magician. Thankfully we didn’t have to worry about her disappearing into the back of a box or being given the straight jacket treatment inside a tank of water.

The highlight was Ella’s uncle trying to guess which coloured block was taken out of a wooden box by his niece. The fact he had to keep referring to the instructions kind of killed the magic. The O’Briens won’t be tacking this show on the road any time soon.

All this magic obviously began to rub off on Ella. While eating dinner the other night, she announces: “I have a magic trick for you all.’’ We all sit to attention, bar Li’l Holly who’s too busy showing how to magically make a sausage bake disappear. We waited with baited breath. This could be good. She’s really taken in the concept of magic through all the various tricks she’s witnessed.

“Ready?’’ she asks. We nod. Ella takes a deep breath, sits up tall and says: “Look, I can talk with my eyes closed’’.

Have you children delved into the world of magic? What’s their favourite trick?

Aaaaaah hahahaha that is adorable. I was actually rather in suspense reading that. Nice writing there! No magic tricks here yet but give her time, I’m sure it’s on the cards near the top of the pile.

  2. Haha! Oh that’s beautiful! Kids are such magical little beings themselves aren’t they. They can make you smile when you have a heavy heart. They can also magically make a mountain out of a washing pile in only one day! My girls absolutely loved their magic trunks for Christmas. I had to watch balls vanish before my very eyes all week!! xx

    haha that made me laugh!

I remember my little brother doing a card trick in front of us (older) sisters and Mum, and of course we all clapped and OOHed and I said, “WOW! How did you DO that?” and he looked a bit stunned and turned to Mum and said, “I don’t know! Mum, how did I??”

LOL!! Oh, that is classic, Toni. Kids say the funniest things!
There were a few of those moments on Christmas Day for us too! Sadly, they were from the adults! 😉

    haha she’s a cutie!

my girl loves to do “magic tricks” by holding things in her tiny hands and putting it behind her back or just holding it and asking us “where is it??” She fails as a magician but wins our hearts all the same 🙂

    • Kel says:

Awww, Ai that is just adorable.
It’s kind of like Ella when she plays hide and seek. She hides under her bed covers, as if we can’t tell there’s a lump on her bed! LOL! 🙂

  6. Caz says:

To cute! I bet she does it very well too :O)

  7. amie says:

Love it! Maya cracked me the other night when she did a puppet show with a pig dressed as a cow……

  8. So cute. Reminds me of my little brother’s fave joke when we were kids. Ready? Now close your eyes. Dark, isn’t it? Bwahahaha!

    • Kel says:

LOL!! Oh my goodness, that is a joke Ella would love, Laney. Hence, I won’t be telling her about it or she’ll make me close my eyes 20-30 times per day!! LOL! 🙂

  9. Tat says:

From what I’ve heard about Ella, talking with her eyes closed shouldn’t be too challenging 😉

  10. Hotly Spiced says:

She’s so cute. Did the trick take much practising?

  11. Lisa wood says:

Oh that is too cute!! Love kids jokes – our boys play pranks all of the time….sometimes they get me, other times I hear them talking about the prank before they actually carry it out!!

Ella is so cute. Hope she stays like that all of the time!

    Cheers
    Lisa
