girl with tiara

I’m in the midst of trying to give this blog a bit more focus. I came up with a list of things I enjoy blogging about and I’d love to get your feedback.

The humour, for the most part, will stay. (Yes, I can hear you all groaning). However, by coincidence, there seems to be a bit of a Crown Princess Mary theme in my life – Tasmania, a classic style, princesses, marrying a prince and living in palaces. OK, maybe not that last bit.

Anyway, here’s the elevator pitch:

Kellie O’Brien is an author, media woman, funny mummy blogger, mum to two li’l princesses and a li’l princess herself, at just 150cms. OK, so that’s being a tad generous. She provides a look inside the life of Tasmania’s “other” princess – all while striving for Princess Mary’s style.

Here’s the tagline (not 100% sold on this):

Inside the life of Tasmania’s “other’’ princess

My Tasmanian Backyard – giving readers a peek into some of our finest Tasmanian places and access to our scrumptious food.

Classic style and beauty – forget high-end fashion and the latest crazes. I’m a classic, chic sort of gal. Give me fashion I can wear next year and beauty products that won’t make me look like a clown and I’m all yours.

Raising princesses – the good, the bad and the downright funny. From how to do their hair, princess craft activities and all the issues that come with raising girls.

Living a princess life – juggling home, work (writing/media), charity and playing mum.

The Shed – Every man needs a shed – and a voice.

Plus, stay tuned. This week I have a pretty neat giveaway and a little announcement later in the week.

So, honest opinions. What do you think? What do you like? What do you hate? What have I missed?

I like the sound of it all! I enjoy reading your blog! I too am currently a mum to 2 little princesses!

I think you are on to a winner! I am a Taswegian myself and have 1x princess and 2x princes.

I love the idea of getting tips on how to do hair! I have three daughters and still ahven’t mastered the art. To be honest, I hate trying to do their hair! So yes, I am keen on that part, but it all sounds great to me, and I love the tagline!

    • Kel says:

Thanks Michelle. I’ve learnt a couple of tricks with the whole hair thing, so I’ll be sure to get that post up as soon as I can for you. Our mornings are now far less stressful. x

To be honest, I love the concepts for the most part, but the princess thing is a bit much for me. I’m really sorry! I like the “raising princesses” idea but it took me a while to work out who the the “other” princess was that you were referring to, and the “living a princess life” heading doesn’t quite gel for me. Sorry…! I guess, while I don’t mind referring to little girls as ‘little princesses’ (well, sometimes anyway – I have 3 myself), I do also like the idea that we don’t have to be princesses, or strive to be beautiful, or “princessy” to live happy, satisfying lives and be good mothers. And I THINK that’s your point – but the tagline and stuff confused me a bit as to whether I’d gotten that wrong… I love your humour and your blog, but I’m not so into the stuff relating to beauty, or striving for Princess Mary’s style, that sort of thing, sorry. I like the reality-of-being-a-mum-to-three-kids stuff…. which I *think* is what you’re aiming for anyway, but the “classic style” and “princess life” stuff just got me wondering if I was missing the point. I’m sorry to not be 100% positive, I hope that’s ok – you asked for feedback… It’s ok if you delete this though, I do understand!

Thanks so much for your feedback, Linda. I really do appreciate it.
I’ve got a post that I wrote last week for America’s National Princess Week that I never got around to posting due to time. I may put it up today or tomorrow if I get a chance. It will at least explain my thinking behind the whole “princess” concept and how the Disney version of a princess is not my cup of tea. But basically, it’s about fostering our children’s imaginations, believing that we can be whatever we want to be in life (even us mums) and how today’s princesses are great role models through their humanitarian efforts. I also think Princesses like Princess Di, Princess Mary and Dutchess of Cambridge Kate are “beautiful” because they have beautiful souls – not because of anything on the exterior.
I should also point out that because there’s a princess theme running through the blog – including the title which has now been around for 18 months – the content won’t change too much. I won’t be talking about princesses – it will still be the reality of being a mum to two girls. Rather it’s a way to give a theme to the headings/categories and to tie it into the blog’s title.
In saying all that, I may need to work on that tagline a little more. Plus I hope to put together an About page that will explain my logic! Hopefully! 😉
And the style stuff is noted. I may even take that one to Facebook and see if there’s enough interest in it. So thanks for bringing that up.
Again Linda, I really do appreciate you giving me this feedback. Sometimes it’s difficult to sit at home and come up with ideas all on your lonesome!! x

  10. I love Cath! 🙂
Tagline needs tweaking to “lives” and “princesses”.
I’m sure Kel will be fine with your comment Linda, good, honest opinion. It’s not gonna click with everyone. 🙂

  11. Tat says:

As you know I’m not keen on the princess thing either, you do so much more than that same Princess Mary does, she’s got babysitters and she doesn’t need to work for a living, although I’m sure she’s got her challenges, too. Having said that it’s your blog and it should reflect who you are. If that’s a theme you identify with, then by all means keep it… but you might need to explain it a bit more (than just ‘striving for Princess Mary’s style’) for those of us who don’t get it 😉

  12. Tat says:

I’m back! I think I’ve worked out what was bugging me. It’s not so much the princess theme, it’s the comparison with Princess Mary. As I said before, it’s just not a fair comparison, she’s got a lot more help being the princess she is (did I mention a stylist, too?). I’d be a lot happier to see you not as the ‘other’ princess but as a princess in your own right.

    • Kel says:

Thanks so much for the feedbac, Tat. You know I love your honesty.
I’ve left a rather long and detailed response to Linda below which covers a lot of your points too, so I’ll try not to repeat myself. But I do get the “Princess Mary” comment. I think it’s something I need to work on with the tagline/elevator pitch.
Plus, as noted in Linda’s reply, I’ll have a post up today or tomorrow (time allowing) that will explain what I like about princesses – and it has nothing to do with the Disney version!
Again, I really do appreciate that you tell it like it is, Tat. x

  13. I was never a princess when growing up. I didn’t even have a Barbie or any other dolls. So I don’t really relate to the Princesses. But, I’m looking forward to making a girl one day and let her be the one and only Princess in my life if she chooses. So whatever fits with what you feel on the inside is what you should go with, Kel. Just don’t go overboard or else you might freak me out!

    • Kel says:

LOL! I definitely won’t be going overboard, Rhonda. As I’ve said below in some of my other responses, I won’t be talking about princesses here. It’s basically a way to pull the categories together and to give this blog some sort of theme. The content will still be a real mum in the real world – with all the humorous stuff thrown in!!
Thanks for giving me the feedback though, Rhonda. And here’s hoping you get that li’l princess too. x

  14. Mandy says:

love it all, keep it all.
