baby feet

EVER said something that by the time you realised what you’d said it was too late to take back and as a result you looked like a douche bag?

Well, not so long ago someone was kindly commenting on how they enjoyed reading my newspaper column about my pregnancy, birth and rearing Ella during her first year. They said they enjoyed it because their granddaughter was a month younger and so it helped them anticipate what was coming next. She said a month after I wrote something her granddaughter would be doing it – ie rolling, walking, talking etc.

My response: “Oh, I used to write them a bit in advance, so she would have done a lot of that stuff for a few weeks before it got printed?’’

I smiled, then wondered why everyone in the room was giving me death stares. A quick rewind in my brain as to what I’d just said and I realised I was implying her granddaughter was slow.

All of a sudden the clock was telling me it was time to go home.

Does your brain and mouth sometimes not work in sync?

Oh my goodness, all.the.time! The best one was the day I commented on my friend’s daughter’s clothes… “Oh, I see she’s dressed herself again,” I said loudly. She hadn’t dressed herself. Oops!! Don’t feel too bad, everyone does it!

  2. Caz says:

Yup – me too. My foots been in my mouth so often I’m considering buying waterproof socks!! At some stage I’m going to have to stop blaming baby brain. My baby is 4 in a couple of days!

    • Kel says:

Now there’s a business idea, Caz. Waterproof socks! I could use a few pairs of those!
And yes, Holly is 18 months old now, so not even sure I’m allowed to use that excuse either! 🙂

  3. I do that sort of thing all the time. And Poss is now 7 years old.

That’s why I like writing, I can usually catch myself before hitting the publish button!

    • Kel says:

Too true, Renee. And even then, if I muck up, I get to delete some of it and no one will ever know – except the few hundred people who have subscribed to this blog! LOL! 🙂

  4. Shelly says:

I wish I could blame Baby Brain for my foot-in-mouth, but I was afflicted long before babies ever entered the picture!

  5. Tat says:

I kind of learned the hard way to stop and think before I say anything about anyone else’s kids. It doesn’t always work…

    • Kel says:

Oh yes, so true, Tat. Dangerous territory.
I’m not sure how I got so caught out with this one. Here I was thinking it was just a bit of innocent conversation! What a dill!

  6. Haha classic Kel and so are those that commented too! I’ve been known to do such things and have done so from such a young age. My Mum use to say I didn’t have to say EVERTHING that came into my head! Lol

    • Kel says:

Oh yes, I think I may have been given that lesson too once upon a time, Fee! I think when you’re tired your brain and mouth just don’t seem to work in sync! Mind you, I’m now getting full nights sleep again, so not sure I even have that excuse… LOL! 🙂

  7. Lisa wood says:

Oh I so do that all of the time..and my youngest baby is now six years old…so I guess I cant blame it on baby brain? How about Mummy Bone Tired Brain?

    Cheers
    Lisa

  8. I agree with you Caz that at some stage we have to stop blaming baby brain. That are some kind of habits that should be uprooted!

  9. Love it! LOL I am sure that I do the same thing all the time, though I cannot actually think of any specific examples…probably due to the current 37 week pregnancy brain!

    • Kel says:

LOL! Oh yes, totally understand that too, Christie. At least you have a genuine excuse. I’m not sure I can get away with the “baby brain” tag anymore! 🙂

  10. Oh all the time! I try to check for clues for babies if they are boys or girls when they are tini tiny and dressed all in white…otherwise I say “How Sweet” because I was caught once say boy when it was girl and felt terrible!
But in saying that Princess Mini Me has been called a boy many times while we have traveled, even though she was dressed in pink! So I know everyone puts there foot in their mouth at some point!

    • Kel says:

Oh, I relate to that, Kym. Ella was called a boy a few times too when she was younger. I think it was because she always had pretty short hair!
