Last night I posted this photo on Facebook of Texta all over our good leather lounge suite.

How to get pen off a leather lounge suite

and 200-odd comments later we had this…

how to get pen off of leather

After trying a host of things (eucalyptus oil, baby wipes, eye makeup remover…), guess what it was that took the Texta – also known as marker or pen for those outside Australia – off the leather lounge suite?

For us, it was hairspray – and a fair bit of elbow grease. And not just any hairspray. It had to be decent hairspray. L’Oreal hairspray in fact, as the cheaper brand did nothing to get rid of the marker.

Although, after half a bottle you wouldn’t want to have lit a match in the lounge room! Boy, oh boy!

Here are some of the most popular answers from readers (you may want to try a small inconspicuous area first):

  • WD40
  • Hairspray
  • Chux Magic Eraser
  • Toothpaste
  • Jif
  • Windex
  • Enjo Fabric Glove
  • Baby wipes
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Gumpton
  • Milk or hot milk
  • Bi carb made into a paste
  • Perfume

Thanks for all the suggestions, including new kids, just pretending it’s not there, buying a new couch, colouring in the rest of the couch with a Texta and pushing the couch up against the wall…..

And by the way, the culprit was a rather cheeky two year old who simply couldn’t resist drawing a Van Gough on that amazingly white canvas!

What have you used to remove pen, marker or Texta from leather and which one worked best?

HOORAY!! I’m so glad you managed to remove the marks, Kel — and isn’t the internet a wonderful thing!

    • Kel says:

I know! It’s such a relief, Toni. It’s incredible how easy the hairspray worked. I wasn’t expecting that!
And whatever did mothers do before the internet? I guess I would have got the answer at Friday night Bingo or Saturday afternoon chat `n’ choose! Hehe! 😉

  2. Never heard of the hairspray one, so glad it worked, will be adding that to the memory bank as I have a cream leather lounge as well. 🙂

It’s incredible stuff, Nikki. And it’s interesting that only the more expensive hairspray worked. Maybe more alcohol in it? I’m not sure! I noticed in a few patches there was still faint pen marks, so we might have to redo a bit of it. I’m interested to see how the WD40 works now. That was probably one of the most popular comments on the Facebook page last night. Fingers crossed you never have to worry about it though!! 🙂

  3. Well, I have a very similar couch – WITH PINK INK PAD MARKS ALL OVER IT.

I have scrubbed it so much that the leather was starting to come off so I gave up and accepted that my once white, now slightly brown and grey lovely couch was to now have a touch of pink.

Guess what I am buying tomorrow!

    • Kel says:

What sort did you end up getting, Claire? I have to admit, I’m thankful it was the back of the couch. The things you buy pre-kids, hey! 🙂

How cool is that! She was exploring her creative side, and you explored your range of cleaning products! I love how others have such great hints/tips to share – never would have thought of hair spray – Gumpton would have been my choice!!
Will remember this if we ever need to (I have always wanted a leather lounge)
How do you keep it looking white with kids ? Next time we want to a motorhome from scratch – and I am trying to convince hubby to put in leather lounges – but with boys I am thinking black!!

    • Kel says:

I know! It’s just genius, Lisa. I have to admit, I’d never heard of Gumpton until Facebook, so that was a new one for me!
If I had my time again, I wouldn’t buy a cream couch – or a house with cream curtains, cream carpet… 😉 I never really believed people when they said you’ll regret that couch once you have children.
This couch is actually in the front lounge and the girls tend to use the second lounge more, so it escapes their sticky, dirty hands quite a bit. The couch in the second lounge though, boy, that’s another story… 😉
      Go with black!!!!
