AFTER a hectic day riding her bike, picnicking and seeing how many ways she could throw herself down a slide (oh, it can be tough being a preschooler), Princess Ella needed something to settle her  before dinner. Actually, she just needed something to settle her full stop.

It seemed the perfect opportunity to download the free CBeebies On The Go app via The Bloke in The Shed’s iPhone.

The look on his face was akin to a dog whose bone was taken away from it, never to be seen of again. He had every reason to worry.

I’d barely finished explaining to Ella what to do and she was confidently flicking and tapping the screen like a pro. Perfectly pitched to the (nearly) four-year-old princess, it features games and short video clips from its popular shows, including one of her favourites, Charlie and Lola. Among the games are Teletubbies matching pairs picture game and Kerwhizz jigsaw game.

Ella’s favourite was the 3rd & Bird tap-the-fruit challenge, mainly because it inspired so much excitement as she tried to tap the fruit before it passed across the screen. The puzzles were quite challenging for her to begin with, until we realised the idea was to click on the two images you wanted to swap, instead of sliding them.  Once she got a handle on this, the puzzles became much easier.

Her favourite video was by far Big Cook Little Cook – who can refuse decorating a chocolate train cake? She watched this five times!

I was particularly drawn to the Get Squiggling program. I love the idea of drawings coming alive, further fueling their imaginations when it comes to creating their own Van Goghs. As far as the games, Number Jacks was an opportunity for her to start recognising the difference between a 6 and a 9 by listening for the number and then matching it with one on the screen.  I’ve already seen an improvement thanks to this game.

It’s this mix of being hugely entertaining, while still learning vital information for her age that makes this so appealing. There’s great variety, so little chance of becoming bored easily. It would have been particularly handy during our recent trip to Hobart, where a lot of patience on Ella’s part was required. And mine, I might add.

My only concern is the short videos could wear thin if on repeat. However, in all, this brightly coloured, easy-to-navigate app from BBC Worldwide is a wonderfully entertaining and educational app from a trusted brand.

The CBeebies On The Go app is now live at ITunes and FREE to download on an iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The CBeebies channel for kids is on Foxtel and Austar.

What’s your child’s favourite CBeebies program? Have they tried the CBeebies On The Go app? What other apps would you recommend for preschoolers?

I’ve been looking for some fun (and free) apps for my son. I like the sound of this one. Off to download now!

  2. Kel says:

Thank you!! This will go down a treat in our home 😀 E is a HUGE fan of Charlie and Lola…I’m thinking they will feature heavily over Xmas this year in the gift department…

But I don’t mind, it’s one of the very few shows I can cope with and not want to throw a heavy object at the TV. Maybe because they only come in small, 10min doses?

So now the plan is to wrestle my phone from E’s hand’s so I can get the app for her 🙂 Charlie and Lola here we come!

    • Kel says:

Hope E enjoyed it, Kel. I’m with you on the Charlie and Lola thing. Lola is actually quite entertaining to watch. We also have quite a few Charlie and Lola books, which Ella loves! 🙂

I am glad that there is a new Iphone application today. I have to believe in you that I’ve been looking for some fun apps for my son. I like also the sound of this one. Thanks for sharing a good stuff to us.

This could come in very handy tomorrow when I have to tackle the shops with this kids… eek!!

    • Kel says:

Yes, good luck with that! We used it at a restaurant the other day when it was taking too long for the food to come out. Usually she’d be whingeing she’s hungry, but we didn’t hear a peep from her! 🙂

We have a number jacks DVD and Maya loves it – unfortunately she knows how to start it again and I am sure I have been conned after saying “when this finishes it is time to turn the TV off!”

    • Kel says:

LOL!! Love that, Amie. I’d never heard of Number Jacks until this app. I really like the Number Jacks game on this one. I really should hunt down a DVD for Ella – maybe for Christmas. Especially if it’s going to help her with her recognising numbers. 🙂

  6. Lisa Wood says:

We havent tried any of the apps for preschoolers yet! But they sure sound good. Love how easy Ella found it after a few turns! Kids are amazing with how quick they can pick it all up.

    Cheers
    Lisa

    • Kel says:

It just astounds me, Lisa. I can’t imagine I would have been quite so tech savvy when I was a kid if this sort of technology was around! 🙂

  7. Di says:

Kel – thanks for alerting me to this app – Olive hasn’t put it down! She’s mad for Charlie and Lola but has now discovered a whole new world of characters she’s never ‘met’ before 😀

I didn’t even have to show her – she just jumped straight in. She’s definitely part of the i-generation!
