NOW I’ve started this princess party planning thing for Baby Holly’s first birthday, I’ve become just a tad hooked. And because I still need to keep the blog up, I’m combining my two current obsessions. Aren’t you lucky. No need to thank me.

Now that the invitation is done, I’ve gone for the most important element next – the food. These are the things I know about keeping adults and children happy at an afternoon birthday party (recipes to come in a later post):

Heart Hamwiches (and Princess Ella has requested some with dots on them – ie a fairy bread version)

Baby BLTs (these are too cute. Enough said, really)

Chewy Chocolate Slice (no party is complete without white dresses covered in chocolate)

Pink cupcakes (yes, of course they’ll be pink)

Homemade sausage rolls (it wouldn’t be a party without sausage meat in pastry)

Dips, cheese, chips and biscuits (ah, did I mention it’s a party) Photo credit.

Fruit platter (just to balance out the sugar and salt. And Baby Holly’s got to eat something) Photo credit.

I also usually include baby rice cakes, dried apple and other finger food for those low on teeth (yes, that’s counting grandparents).

And, as per usual, I’ll cook too much and we’ll be eating it for the next fortnight.

I’m still undecided on the cake at this stage. Princess Ella chose this one for her baby sister.  Of course.

And then this one:

Hmmm, talk about testing me.

What are your favourite party foods? Am I missing anything?

  2. Megs says:

What about fairy bread? Always seems to be the first thing to disappear around here! Good luck with the cakes, glad it’s you not me hehe

    • Kel says:

Oh yes, Megs. We usually do them in the heart shapes too. Just to make them extra special!
And yes, think I need all the good luck I can get on those cakes! 🙂

  3. amie says:

Looks wonderful! I can’t wait to see the cake 🙂

  4. Nee says:

Loving that castle cake! Don’t envy you if you attempt it though. Baby BLT’s are super cute. I’ll be stealing that one, thanks 🙂

    • Kel says:

Thanks Nee!! Hehe!! I think the castle one is easier than the merry-go-round!
And steal away on the Baby BLTs. They’re always a huge hit! x

  5. Grace says:

Nom, nom ! How exquisite are those heart sandwiches ?!! And those homemade sausage rolls !!! Can we come ??? 😉

  6. Looking forward to seeing the cake. 😉
    Good Luck! xx

  7. Toni says:

OOOH YUMMY, I’m so hungry now. Love the baby BLTs!

  8. Louisa says:

Oh my goodness – now I am thinking of the food for Bear’s party – noooo, I’m not ready for that yet lol. This looks amazing Kel!

  9. miss.cinders says:

Ohhh I wish you were my Mum!!!

Looking forward to the recipe’s 🙂

  10. Lisa Wood says:

What a grand party you are going to have! Sounds like you have all the food sorted 🙂

The second cake looks easier than the first cake.

When our second boy was turning three we deicded to make a 3D Duck Cake. Hubby and I spent hours on it, and then it fell down in the middle of the night….in the morning it was a mad crazy rush to get it fixed in time!

    Cheers
    Lisa

    • Kel says:

You’re spot on with your cake predictions, Lisa. The second is HEAPS easier than the first. I’m not going anywhere near that merry-go-round! LOL!
I have fears of what happened to your duck cake, happening to that merry-go-round! 😉

  11. nellbe says:

We always have those little hot dogs, everyone loves them. But I think you really do have plenty here, just keep it easy for yourself so you enjoy it too.

    • Kel says:

So true, Nellbe. I think I had too much for Ella’s first birthday and I really didn’t enjoy it. I’ll only do small quantities of all these items. And even then, I may cut out the odd item if I feel we’ve got enough. x

  12. ohh i wish i was one again and could have that birthday party. Setting a bench mark 🙂 My goal is to make a creative birthday cake every year for my daughter and future children to come 🙂

    • Kel says:

Yes, after the dragon cake I did for The Bloke in The Shed’s birthday, I can see these cakes are going to get more complex each year. I think the cake is the best part of the birthday. Well, that’s what Ella thinks, anyway! 😉

  13. Elisha says:

Chocolate Crackles and Honey Joys ! Hands down yumminess !

  14. You’ve seriously put me to shame – Delilah got a Coles mudcake and a family dinner with the grandparents when she turned one earlier this year 😉 Good luck with all the planning, can’t wait to see how it all comes together for Baby Holly!

    • Kel says:

Hehe!! Oh Kirsty, she would have enjoyed it regardless of the cake or party guests. Baby Holly will most likely only have grandparents and a couple of cousins. It’ll be fairly low key. According to Ella, the cake HAS to be spectacular though. Poor me!! Hehe! 😉

  15. Shae says:

    I want a baby BLT

  16. Wow, they all look lovely. Looking forward to seeing the cake!

    • Kel says:

Thanks Lee. Feeling a bit of pressure now with all these comments looking forward to the cake! Oh dear, what have I done to myself! LOL! 🙂

  17. The cake is awesome. I like it so much.

  18. Di says:

I love the heart shaped sandwiches. I did bear shaped ‘fairy’ bread with chocolate sprinkles for Olive’s teddy bear party! very popular!

Another thing that always gets eaten at our parties are strawberry and marshmallow kebabs (chocolate dipping sauce optional).

Check out http://sweetapolita.com/blog/ for some devastatingly gorgeous cakes!

    • Kel says:

Ooh, I love the idea of strawberry and marshmallow kebabs. That would actually work quite well. May have to do a bit of revision with the menu, Di!! Thanks. x

  19. Marita says:

Fairy bread and fruit platters and I’m set 🙂
