2013 Female Dancer of the Year

This has been one of THE most incredible weeks. I have so much to share, yet my fingers won’t type fast enough.

    OK, here goes:

    • Last week I did my first public relations online live training (webinar) for Kellie O’Brien Media and had the most incredible feedback. It led to people taking up the upcoming Publicity Alchemy program. I am just so chuffed. To think it all began back in 2010 because of a post I wrote on this little blog.
    • On Wednesday I was guest speaker at the Devonport Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s women’s business luncheon on social media for business. As a result, I was featured in the media twice within the space of a week. However, the real thrill was just the volume of emails and calls I received afterwards from businesses. Seriously, I am so blessed. Although, Julian has been quick to let me know he was featured in the Fin Review’s glossy BOSS magazine this week. Kind of beats my two Advocate stories!
    • Lastly, and definitely the highlight of the week, was Ella’s dance concert today. We started the day off in the running for 2013 Worst Parent of the Year when we realised we’d not only arrived at the wrong venue for Ella’s dance concert, but we were in the WRONG TOWN. After the most heart-racing trip to the venue, we arrived to find everyone locked inside. Poor Ella. She was inconsolable. Eventually, we found a way in – with five minutes to spare before her group’s performance. Despite the fluster, she performed beautifully and loved every minute of it. To top it off, at the end of the concert she was named 2013 Best Female Dancer for her category. Nothing can beat that right now. I’m the proudest parent – and have vowed to always read every word of the dance newsletter from here on in.

  • What the heck are stage presents?

What the heck are stage presents?

Kellie O'Brien Three Li'l PrincessesPrincess Ella and I are very similar – apart from the fact I have great hair. We bond over singing, dancing, drawing, music, craft and preening my great hair.

Only yesterday we spent the afternoon making special letters for each of the kids at childcare she won’t see again after this week. Tomorrow marks the last day of childcare before she graduates to “big girl school’’.

However, there’s one little thing that is fast becoming “our special bonding moment’’. The one hour-long block that is just for us to talk about the things that connect us most. It’s Young Talent Time and the singing and dancing.

Ella is a 7pm to bed person, but on Sundays I’ve been allowing her to stay up until 7.30pm. We talk about what performances we liked best, who we thought should have won, how good (or bad) the singing was and why the dancing worked (or didn’t). I try to encourage her to look at the negatives of a performance constructively – rather than just “that was terrible, Mum’’.

It’s also been a chance to share some of my (limited) singing and dancing knowledge from years of lessons. Like when the rock guitarist performed on Sunday, I was trying to explain to her about “stage presence’’. “But where are the presents, Mum?’’ Failed on that one.

Then, when we were marvelling at the YTT team’s performance of Beyonce’s Halo, her only reaction at the end was: “The sky is green? And the ground is blue? What? That’s like Upsey Down Town, Mum. That’s silly.’’ Upsey Down Town being a popular Play School song.

The last was again during the rock guitar performance, where host Rob Mills introduces her performance by saying “she’ll rock your socks off’’. Ella’s response: “But where is she going to put them?’’ After a long and detailed explanation of what “rock your socks off’’ means, she asked: “Can I rock my socks off with my recorder?’’ Eat your heart, darling.

What’s your special bonding moment with your children?

WHAT I’ve learnt from having two princesses is that: girls will be girls. And when you’re not a princess…. you’re a fairy!

    Preferably a dancing one!

    FEATURE: Grateful for Easter Bunny

Ella was lucky enough to speak to Easter Bunny this week

    This week I’m grateful for:

    • A hubby who has a stellar Easter Bunny voice – a high-octave voice he doesn’t mind using on his office phone to a three-year-old on the other end. You see, after Ella was misbehaving last week, I resorted to ringing Easter Bunny to tell him not to visit. Since then, we’ve had a super little angel. It finally resulted in Ella getting to phone the deliverer of chocolate eggs on Wednesday to let him know he can now visit her next weekend. Imagine Bindi Irwin talking after sucking on a helium balloon: “Now, you keep being a good little girl for your mummy and I’ll bring you a lovely chocolate egg”.
    • The wonderful people at ECCO, who sent the most gorgeous pair of shoes and a $250 voucher for a reader. It’s days like these I’m extra glad I started blogging.
    • For catching up with family. Ella had cousins visit from interstate this week and was able to twist their arms to watch her dance lesson today. However, she was far too interested in her new audience to actually dance. While everyone else was mid twirl, she was busy waving to her cousins on the sidelines. Too cute.

So, what are you grateful for this week?

I’m joining with  Maxabella Loves to share what I’m grateful for.

  • Grateful for underpants

    Holly's new toothy smile

    This week I’m grateful for:

    1. Underpants. Thankfully, Ella had knickers on at dancing this week. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, may I suggest you read When life goes bottoms up. Good if you like to have a giggle at someone else’s expense!
    2. Toothy pegs finally breaking through. Baby Holly popped her first tooth this week… and her second. There’s no point doing things in halves!
    3. My first paid PR job, including “Skype meeting’’. The wonderful Kat Cho from Deals for Mum gave me my first (unexpected) PR job this week. And my business isn’t even set up yet! I spent ages doing my hair, makeup, dressing nicely (well, from the waist up) and even sprayed on a bit of perfume to hide the baby spew smell (just in case you can smell someone while Skyping them! Cue: hubby rolling his eyes).
    4. Most importantly, the fact that when sleep deprivation has been all too much (due to No. 2), there’s always been something to make me giggle (see No. 1) and smile (see No. 3). I love my life!

Tell us, what are you grateful for this week?

    Ella's dancing feet

WHEN preparing for three-year-old Ella’s dance lesson in the morning, I’ll be double, no triple, checking we have EVERYTHING. Why? Well first, let’s rewind to last Friday morning.

Last Friday was particularly hectic – there was breastfeeding to be done, bags to pack, dishwashers to clear (well, only one dishwasher) and bottoms to be wiped. “No mum, I can wipe my own bottom’’. Here we go. “Of course you can, darling. Just make sure you put your underpants back on, OK?’’

Let’s just say this conversation went on for a while (I won’t bore you with the script) and ended with “I’ll put them on later’’. Fine, put them on later. I’ve got other things to do. Ah, we spend so long pushing for the day our li’l people become independent, little realising the ramifications.

You see, half way through her dance lesson, as I bounced Baby Holly on my lap, the dance teacher instructed her li’l subjects to lie back, feet in the air and pretend to be seals balancing a ball on their toes. It looked so gorgeous. Twenty sets of little feet cycling towards the sky.

Then a thought crossed my mind, my body suddenly felt hot and I slightly choked. Had Ella put her pants on in the end? If not, there were quite a few people now getting an eye full. Yep, she was as naked as the day she was born.

“Next, let’s all twinkle our fingers in the air, now bend over and touch the floor.’’ Nooooooooo. Please. She hasn’t got pants on. Too late. The other mums around me were in absolute hysterics. I had my hands full with Holly and could do nothing but watch it all unfold.

A few minutes later Ella runs over to me. Little does she realise just how much of herself she’s revealed to her peers. I quickly do the hand-up-the-dress thing just to confirm what I already know and indeed, there are no underdaks covering the “front and back bum’’. I try to convince her that we need to get her spare pants out of her bag before the next dance begins, but she runs off laughing. Yeah, real funny.

Finally, when dancing has finished, she complies and happily jumps into a pair of stripey pink and white knickers. Too late now, love. Everyone’s already seen what you had for breakfast. *sigh*

So, my lesson to you is, fight for your little people’s independence, sure. But understand, as with everything, there are consequences.

Do you have issues with keeping your child in underpants? Or is it just my child?
