SHED: Fearing my girls are growing all too fast

THERE used to be two things in life I was scared of – spiders and swiveling around on the toilet to discover there was no toilet paper. Now it’s three things. Yes, now I am scared my li’l princesses are growing up way too fast. Not Kel, as she has achieved her vertical capacity in life and is destined only to shrink with age. No, the other two – Princesses Holly and Ella.

Holly is growing up quickly, despite having a serious allergy (she is allergic to sleep and if Kel doesn’t get a sleep through soon it could well be a life-threatening condition). It only seems like yesterday Holly was born (have I mentioned before she was born the day after a Collingwood premiership? I have? Oh, good). While it has been a hard slog with her aversion to sleep, it’s hard to believe she’s come from being a newborn to now looking at you with an understanding that only a developed littlie can.

Recently I’ve been trying to teach Holly how to do “kisses”. I can see Holly processing it as she sits there like a fish, mouth open, giving me sloppy “kisses’’ while obviously thinking “for god sake, go and brush your teeth, man’’. In one recent “kisses’’ lesson I was too enthusiastic and we ended up butting heads. It shocked me as she looked at me, paused for a second, then screwed up her face and broke up in uncontrollable tears as if to say “you stupid idiot, that really hurt’’.

As for Ella, she’s three going on 13. She already rules the house. Yet we forgive her because she has a personality which is entertaining, addictive and downright hilarious. Her inquisitive mind already has me stumped and dammit it is frustrating.

“But how does it work, Daddy?’’. I don’t know, darlin’.

“Where does the moon go during the day, Daddy?’’. I think it goes for chicken nuggets at Maccas, darlin’.

“Why do boys have scoody-doodies Daddy?” Go ask your mother.

Oh well, Kel and I have accepted this is our lot in life. And truth be told, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

FEATURE: I’m grateful for my daughter

    This week I’m grateful for:

    • For my three-year-old daughter allowing me to see what I’ve become this week under the effects of a cold and sleep deprivation. Jiggling her “baby’’ on her hip this afternoon, she remarked how her bub was very tired. “You woke her up. I’m very annoyed with you. She’s going to be very tired now. OK? You were very naughty.’’ She then produced a rather over-the-top frown, with furrowed brow. Oh dear. I need to relax.
    • Again, for Ella, realising my misery this week, allowed me a 20-minute nap one afternoon. Well, after poking me in the head 15 times and then shouting “Wake up, Jeff’’. But there was 20 minutes uninterrupted sleep, none-the-less.
    • A pain in the chest (most likely indigestion) being the catalyst for me teaching Ella what to do in an emergency. There were some rather humorous moments (of course), but you’ll have to wait ‘til Tuesday for the full story.

I’m joining with  Maxabella Loves to share what I’m grateful for.

FEATURE: A celebrity is visiting the blog

AFTER announcing on Facebook and Twitter that I was interviewing someone famous on the blog today, instantly the questions started. A clue? He’s in a rock band. Another clue? He has heaps of girls screaming his name.

Aussie rock band? No, the US of A! (Actually, to be honest, Australia too, and a myriad of other countries). New or old? New. Very new. Should they marry a Queen? Hmmm, this one had me puzzled. No, not a Queen. Well, not that I know of.

So, who is our mystery celebrity guest?

Enough with the questions. Please, let me introduce you to….

That’s right, Raggs, from the TV show of the same name and Kids Club Band fame! Contain yourself, ladies. Please. Let the dog talk.

Kellie: So, what can we expect to learn from Raggs and the gang this season?
Raggs: There are so many great things to learn this season, but the most important lesson is for everyone to work together.  When you share and work together, everyone wins.

Kel: We hadn’t seen you on our tellies for a while. What were you up to during the break?
Raggs: As you may know, besides our Raggs TV series, we’re also a real rock ‘n roll band! So during our break, we’ve been busy playing concerts in Australia and the United States! We have also been asked to put a program together for the Club Med Resorts, which have 80 resorts around the world. But, it is really exciting to be back home in Australia!

Kel: Your guitar playing skills are to be admired. Who are your guitar heroes?
Raggs: Thank you for the compliment, but I am still learning! I am influenced by rock, blues and jazz guitarists, but would probably say that I admire Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and a guitar player from the Mississippi Delta named Robert Johnson. Many people don’t know who Robert Johnson was, but he was really cool!

Kel: What’s your favourite song from the show and why?
Raggs: That is a really tough question. I love all of the songs because they remind me of something that happened in the show or the way that we performed it. Can I pick three favourites?! They might change next week, but today I would say: “The TV Theme Song,” “What’s the Dealio,” and “Jungle Zoo!” You can download our songs on iTunes!

Kel: Life can be tough, not to mention frustrating, for pre-schoolers as they try to learn new skills. How do you always stay so positive?
I used to get upset when I couldn’t do something, but my friends have taught me that it doesn’t matter if I succeed as long as I give it my best shot. And, if I keep practicing, I might just get it right.

Kel: Where does Trilby go shopping to get all her stylish accessories? She seems to have a different accessory for every occasion.
Raggs: Trilby loves to shop.  Her favourite store is the Bow-Wow Boutique. She says that they have the best accessories for every occasion.

Kel: Do you have plans for any touring?
Raggs: Oh, yes!!! Playing music for our friends is the most important thing!
We have a lot of exciting touring events scheduled for this year and the next.  Some of these events are free too! Please tell all of your readers to keep checking our website for news and our tour schedule, which we’ll keep updating!!!   Go to:  www.raggs.com.au

Thank you very much for your help spreading the news that we are back on TV! Please let us know if you have any more questions, anytime!!!
    Pawsuuup! Your friend, Raggs

    • You can catch ‘Raggs’ on Boomerang at 9am weekdays and on 7TWO at 6am Monday thru Saturday.

PHOTOS: A sprinkle of fairy dust

AFTER last week’s Wordless Wednesday revealed a photo of Princess Ella and a photo of me “walking the plank”, but taken 30-odd years apart, my Mum started sending through photos of herself at the same age.

What Mum’s photos uncovered is how much we tend to take the same pictures generation after generation. To prove the point, here’s a photo of Mum and Ella dressed as fairies. We won’t reveal how many years apart these two pix were taken.

The little poser – Fairy Princess Ella!
    Mum, looking slightly bewildered!

Cuddles with Ella in our hotel room.

THE O’Briens took a bit of a working holiday to Hobart on the weekend, complete with an introduction to the phrase “are we there yet?’’. This is how the weekend played out:

Friday morning: Hit the road from Devonport to Hobart. Unfortunately, what used to take us 3.5 hours, now takes nearly a whole day. What with stops to milk the cow (me) and feed the masses (Ella and Holly …. oh, and The Bloke in The Shed). Five minutes in, Ella asks: “are we there yet?’’. My first real introduction to a phrase I will now hear for the next 18 years. Strangely, Bindi the Jungle Girl got louder and louder through the CD player as the trip progressed. Memo to self: Buy car DVD player with headphones for the kids.

Friday afternoon: Booked into The Old Woolstore Apartments (our regular haunt) and spent the arvo watching Ella jump on her big bed. The temptation of a trampoline indoors is just too much for her. This time The Bloke in The Shed and I took the King bed and Princess Ella had to settle for the Queen.

Trying to get a decent shot of Ella is challenging!

    As you can tell…

Friday evening: Ate at Hogs Breath, mainly because it was right across the road from the hotel. Baby Holly ate half an avocado, all my carrots and a curly fry. Yet she still woke during the night for feeds. Sheesh.

Saturday morning: We headed further south to the “bush’’ for lunch with Barb from Suenos De Alhambra – Life in the Huon Valley and her family. Visit her newly revived blog – it’s fab. After attacking the dress up box (a lady in heels through to a robot), Ella came away with this gorgeous hat to take home.

The tiger hat and pumpkin hat.

Saturday evening: If you were on Facebook and Twitter, you would have read my tweet/status. It said: “ The girls are sound asleep and hubby’s at a work-related dinner. It’s just me, the laptop and lots of peace and quiet! Bliss!’’ Need I say more.

Sunday: We headed home to Devonport. It was one of the wildest trips we’ve had in a while. Rain and wind on the outside of the car and wind in it (Ella+tummy ache=pppeeeewwwww). Boy, was I grateful to finally be back home. And not just because of the weather, but also due to one small question: “are we there yet?’’.

Sunday evening: One of Julian’s old work shirts died to make a pirate bandana. Ella might just smell like Cap’n Jack sparrow today as part of Pirate Week at child care. True character acting.

    Arr, me hearties!

What did you get up to on the weekend?

  • FEATURE: I’m grateful for manners

    FEATURE: I’m grateful for manners

    Holly's toothy grin.

    This week I’m grateful for:

    • Manners. Three-year-old Ella has the most wonderful manners. After noticing my post baby belly the other day, she was quick to point out “you’ve got a fat tummy, Mum’’. Sarcastically, I repied: “Thanks, darling’’. Her response: “You’re welcome’’. Hmmm. Three year olds do not get sarcasm.
    • Having the opportunity to work with the wonderful Tina from www.tinagray.me on the Aussie Giveaway Linkup, which starts here on the blog Sunday. Make sure you link up your giveaways and/or enter to win some prizes. But please be aware, I’m feeling rather lucky!
    • Someone finally leaving our home. I sniffed out that our guest was making the girls miserable, so I told him, quite frankly, “our relationship blows’’ and he finally went running out the door. Be gone snotty noses.

I’m joining with Maxabella Loves to share what I’m grateful for.
