Aussie Giveaway Linkup #52: A swimmingly good edition

dad and baby swimmingYesterday we went for a dip in a private indoor pool (because we live in Tasmania and you would not go swimming otherwise at this time of year). The water was so warm and the air so cold, at one point I had flashbacks to a scene from Gorillas in the Mist as The Bloke in The Shed approached me in the water amid a sea of fog.

Ella loves the water. However, she’s had a real fear around learning to swim. Yesterday she was wearing her Wahu life jacket and gaining more confidence as the hour went on. After a year of trying to build her confidence to let go of us, she did. Her legs looked like a frog kicking and her fast-paddling hands were akin to a dog who’d just witnessed steak being put on the barbie onshore. But she was loving it. And we were beaming.

Holly, at just 20 months of age, didn’t want to be left out. So, without a floatation device, she tried her best to swim away from our grasp and go alone. She ended up drinking about 15 litres of water. Her nappy later proved that.

When we got home, I told Ella how proud I was of her for having a go. She responded with: “Thanks for being proud of me, Mum. I’m proud of you too’’. I’m still wondering exactly what it is she’s proud of me for.

Anyway, that’s my small but important win for the week. What about you? What win have you had? If you’re still waiting, get clicking below to score yourself a chance at something nice.

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #51: The musical edition

So, what wins do I have to sprout about this week? Well, let’s see:

WIN: I finally got Ella to look beyond Hi-5 and The Fairies and introduced her to High School Musical. I discovered a copy of the DVD tucked away in the cupboard from my entertainment magazine days. She instantly fell in love. I instantly wanted to be 10 years younger so I was half a chance with Zac Efron. OK, maybe more like a 3% chance.

    Zac Efron

LOSE: Three days later we’d watched it five times already and she’d discovered I also had the CD. It is now on high rotation in the car.

WIN: I had to go to the video store (not that they have videos anymore. Someone really needs to rebrand them) to get a copy of Red Dog for the book I’m writing. I took Ella along. We discovered High School Musical 2 and 3. I know. Who would have thought?

LOSE: She’s not interested in the second and third instalment. Not even with a bucket of popcorn thrown in. She just wants the original and to bust a move singing Stick To The Status Quo. Not that she has any idea what “status quo’’ is.

WIN: Did I mention Zac Efron’s not bad looking. Sadly, that’s as good as it gets, people.

Are your children obsessed with any TV shows or movies at the moment?

  • Aussie Giveaway Linkup #48: mini break

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #48: mini break

Hi, we’re not here at the moment. Please, leave a message and we’ll return your comment as soon as possible.

    Poncho
Li'l Holly will NOT be wearing this white poncho to Agfest.

As this post goes live, we’ll be on our way home from a mini break in Launceston (pronounced Lon-ses-ton for the non-Taswegians), in Tasmania’s North. We were a little overdue for a break, so we decided The Bloke in The Shed should get his first taste of Tasmania’s largest agricultural show Agfest. I’m sure it will inspire some riveting read this week about big tractors, Blundstone boots and fleecy-lined Japaras.

    Here’s 5 things I love about a mini break:

    1. Someone else can make the bed for a change. Or just make the bed full stop.
    2. If I feel like food, I can dial for it and it’s not pizza.
    3. I get to increase my collection of mini soaps and shampoos (I’ve been told this is bad etiquette. But seriously, who doesn’t do it? Apart from people who own hotels).
    4. There’s a mini bar. Not that I can ever afford it. Or actually ever feel like Bourbon.
    5. Someone else does the cleaning which, if you’ve ever looked under our dining room table, is a full-time job. If you actually decide to clean, of course.

What do you like about mini breaks? Have you been on one lately? Maybe there’s one in the linky below. Maybe.

  • Aussie Giveaway Linkup #47: The Interview

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #47: The Interview

Today is day seven of the 10-day Virtual Book Tour for the Only Hearts Should Be Worn On Sleeves: The Snotty Truth About Motherhood ebook. Being a journalist, I couldn’t help but want my contribution to the tour to be an interview. So here I am, interviewing myself. Yes, there is nothing I won’t do!

Only Hearts Should Be Worn On Sleeves: The Snotty Truth About Motherhood

How did the idea for the “Mum’s the Word” Advocate newspaper column come about?

I was up the duff. I like writing. I just put two and two together and came up with a mum column. I might add, I had no idea what a mummy blog was at this stage.

What sort of response did you receive from the community about the column?

There were no picket lines outside the Advocate offices, so I took that as a good sign. We had the odd person who was shocked at seeing terms like “up the duff” in their newspaper and banter about your “girls” leaking, while others mobbed Ella in the street as if she was some mini superstar. Thankfully, she hadn’t mastered signing her name by this stage or the whole thing could well have gone to her head.

Why did you decide to form the columns into an ebook?

It could be said I didn’t want to see them buried forever in the dusty archives of the newspaper file room. Maybe I also had visions of buying a Porsche Boxter, but hey, I’ll take the Hyundai Getz.

What’s the best way to describe an ebook, for those who don’t know what it is?

It’s a way to carry this:

    book

in your handbag without putting your back out.

Who would the ebook be an ideal gift for?

Anyone who’s had anything to do with babies or mothers – so pretty much everyone. And Mother’s Day is precisely 14 days away. Order it, include mum’s email address and it’s all done for you. You can thank me later. As can your mum.

What’s the best reaction you’ve had from the ebook/columns?

“You made me snort my wine through my nose.’’ This person clearly needs professional help for their little problem.

Where can I get a copy? I want one NOW.

Of course you do. Just click this link and you’ll be reading within seconds!

The tour features a few giveaways of the ebook, but you’ll need to be quick as some are ending in the next day or two. Now onto some other giveaways…
