5 books to inspire 5 year olds

5 books for 5 year olds

The past six months, Ella has been captivated by chapter books. It started with Enid Blyton’s The Faraway Tree and we haven’t looked back. I thought I’d share the top five books we’ve read so far – books that (maybe) have had me just a little hooked as well. Shh, don’t tell anyone though.

    Magic Faraway Tree Collection

The Magic Faraway Tree Collection * – We’ve read everything – The Enchanted Wood, The Magic Faraway Tree, The Folk of the Faraway Tree and Up the Faraway Tree. This would be our absolute favourite collection. Blyton sure knows how to ignite a child’s imagination. I’ve bought the above copy of the series – three books in one – for Ella’s 5th birthday next month. The only disappointment for me was seeing how the names have changed – Jo, Bessie, Fanny and Dick are now Joe, Beth, Frannie and Rick. Dame Slap has also become Dame Snap. Thank goodness Moonface and Saucepan Man haven’t changed. Get a copy on here.

    The Wishing Chair Collection

The Wishing Chair Collection * – Another Enid Blyton favourite. This one seemed a logical next step after being swept up by the Faraway Tree characters. Ella was just fascinated by the concept of a chair that had wings and all the magic places they visited. We’ve read Adventures of the Wishing Chair and The Wishing Chair Again, but have yet to delve into More Wishing Chair Stories. Again, I’ve bought her the three books in one series for her birthday which means we can read from start to finish. You can grab a copy here.

    The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz * – Ella has not stopped talking about Dorothy. This is another birthday present, but I must admit the copy we hired from the library was a better – and more indepth – book. Although, this version does have an audio book with it. Once we read the book, we hired the movie and now We’re Off To See The Wizard is embedded in my brain! It’s times like those I wish I didn’t have a brain!

    Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory * – I wasn’t sure where to start with Roald Dahl, so have made the leap into one of my favourites. We’re ¾ of the way through this and, I’m embarrassed to say, I’ve been reading beyond our usual “three chapters per night” rule. I think some nights we’ve read six chapters because it’s just far too exciting to put down. As an adult, I appreciate how fantastic Dahl was in creating suspense in his writing.

The Adventures of Stuart LittleThe Adventures of Stuart Little * – This is not the original version of the book, but our library had the movie version adapted into book form. It made for an easy read and we devoured this one over a few days. It then enabled us to hire the movie, which Ella really enjoyed. I wouldn’t mind now buying a copy of the original to compare.

Being able to take Ella from book to film has been a wonderful experience. She tends to get quite scared in many of the G-rated films, so by having read the book she already knows the story has a positive outcome. She loves seeing how the characters in her mind are played out in what she regards as “real life’’. That’s what movies are, right?

I read a quote about not wanting to start a new book, because you’re still living in the world of the last book you read. I’ve felt very much like that with all five of these books. I know Ella has to. There were even tears after The Faraway Tree series ended.

What are your children’s favourite chapter books?

    * To remain open and honest with you, the * denotes affiliate links. This means if you happen to click through to Book Depository and purchase a book, I will earn a small commission. Although, it probably won’t be enough to buy a Wonka chocolate bar. Of course, this doesn’t mean you get charged any more – or any less!

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #70: How to bake a birthday cake recipe

    Dolly Vardon Cake

Choose the hardest cake you can possibly find to make.

Combine the ingredients, stand back and smile at the resulting perfection you’ve achieved with your mixture. Place in tin.

Check cake midway through cooking, only to topple the whole thing over in the oven. The oven cleaned painstakingly by your husband only a week before.

Start from scratch. Find yourself doubting the consistency of the mixture because you’ve rushed it.

Put the cake in the oven. Stay 10 feet away from the oven for entire 1.5 hours of cooking. Worry about the result for entire 1.5 hours of cooking.

Take the cake out of the oven. Be concerned by the crystalisation on the top of the cake.

Turn the cake out onto a cooling rack. Be concerned about the colour of the cake.

Spend the entire day playing with fondant while you decorate the cake into a masterpiece.

Make a batch of cupcakes as a backup in case the cake is inedible.

Day of the birthday: Watch people ooh and aah over the cake.

Cut the cake. Nervously. Offer a piece with a large dollop of apology on the side. Followed by: here, have a sausage roll.

Receive (surprisingly) wonderful feedback about the taste of your cake.

    Hide the cupcakes.

That all counts as a win to me! OK, onto some other wins in this week’s Aussie Giveaway Linkup.

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #69: Bloggy absence

    clock and time

I feel like I’m tiptoeing into confession today. Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It has been exactly a week since I last posted. These are my sins: I’ve been cohorting with another site. I have been posting there every day. For 30 days. And I have neglected the ones I love here.

It’s true. I’ve been doing the #Blogfor30 challenge during September, which meant posting every day for 30 days on my Mum PR site. I finished my last post for the challenge last night and just fell into a bloggy heap.

I used to post here every day once. Raising girls, running a business, writing a book, being a wife, home duties and running two blogs has meant I just can’t sustain daily blogging anymore. Blog for 30 reminded me of that. It’s not so much the writing. That’s easy. I used to write between six and 10 stories daily as a journalists. It’s the uploading of content, finding images, promoting etc.

The other reason for my absence is because I’ve been spending some time garnering ideas for this site. I have a bit of a vision of where I want to take it and give it some purpose – other than being a brain dump of my thoughts. Now to put it all into action. That requires lots of battles with blogging codes and likely me breaking my site in a horrendous way. Think Mr Bean walking into a China shop. Well, we’ll see anyway.

I can assure you all though, the Aussie Giveaway Linkup will still be a key part of the weekly posting schedule. So don’t stress there. Not that you probably were!

Anyway, all will be revealed soon… And if you visit one day and discover a blank screen, you’ll know why.

Are you good with tech-related “stuff’’ or do you end up having words with your computer (and I don’t mean on a Word document)?

OK, onto the all-important Aussie Giveaway Linkup entries.

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #68: Pure silliness

    tea party

    Butter wouldn’t melt….

This week was a reminder of just how quickly our girls are growing up. Some days I wish I could just click the pause button. Other days my finger hovers over the mute button. But I digress…

There will be some video coming this week but, in the meantime, here are some funny moments that make me realise my girls are growing all too fast:

    • Ella (not quite 5) befriended a 10-year-old boy at vacation care this week (school holidays finish in Tasmania today). She followed him around all day and then asked if she could take him home with us. If she was 10 years older, I’d be worried!
    • Ella has been teaching Li’l Holly (2) about the Tom Cat iPad app. While cuddling Holly in the kitchen, she started stroking my face and prompting me to purr. So I started purring like Tom Cat does. It was gorgeous… until she swiftly followed it up by bonking me on the nose in a bid to knock me out! That’ll teach me! (Might I just add I’m not sure how I feel about the girls playing this game!).

Any funny or silly things happen during your week?

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #67: Driving dangerously edition

If you count not dying as a winning week, then yes, we had one of those weeks:

    I won WHAT?

    • We drive out of a car park in Launceston, pull up to the traffic lights and The Bloke in the Shed begins to panic when he can’t figure out if the lights are red or green. At exactly the same moment, we both realise we’re in a one-way street – facing three lanes of oncoming traffic! I’m sure our faces looked like deer caught in a headlight. We are laughing about it now. But can I just say, it wasn’t funny at the time!

Do you have any traffic stories you’re willing to share? Fess up. We’ve all had them!

How to foster a child’s imagination + Pink Poppy giveaway CLOSED

It’s not uncommon to witness a little person, decked out in full dress up, stomping down the hallway. And you’ve never seen a nearly five-year-old work those heels quite like Ella does. I didn’t even know she had hips!

It appears Holly is following suit with her love of dress ups. This week she had on a PJ top, trackie pants, a sheep beanie, a pair of bathers, a mermaid outfit and matching mermaid bag – all at once. She thought she looked utterly gorgeous – and that’s all that matters. (Here she is partly dressed in the above mentioned)

     Pink Poppy

To listen to the stories they create when they’re “made up’’ just reinforces how important it is to foster their imaginations – and capture some hilarious photos for their 18th birthdays.

Then there were the tea parties. I think the novelty lies in being able to pour water from the sweet little teapot into the dainty tea cups and drink from them. Water mess inside I can deal with. And who can’t resist having these little tea cups, saucers, teapot, sugar bowl and milk jug sitting on the kitchen bench against the kettle.

    Pink Poppy

For me, it’s been a big educational experience. Like, did you know purple tea is the best kind of tea? That Rebecca* did something naughty at school and had to sit in the corner? That Holly (nearly 2) can’t pour the tea because she’s not big enough (according to nearly five-year-old Ella who is chief tea pourer)?

The latest creative play comes courtesy of Pink Poppy, who supplied us with:

    Pink Poppy

The beautiful tea set, dainty jewellery box with drawers, old-style bedside clock, snow globe, notepad with mermaid stickers and

    Pink Poppy

sweet turquoise mermaid outfit with matching bag,

Each embraced the mermaid theme. What stands out for me is the quality of the products, how beautifully designed they are and how they’re all traditional toys that fully developing the girls’ imaginations. More importantly, the girls haven’t tired of them, like they do so many of their “gadget’’ toys.

The site allows you to search by “theme” (buzzy bee, dancing, dinosaur, dragon, ladybug and more), making it easy. The real issue is choosing what theme and THEN what products! To learn more about Pink Poppy visit the blogTwitter and Facebook.

We’re giving away the entire collection for your little people to foster their imaginations. To win, simply tell us: what is your child’s favourite game using their imagination?

Terms and conditions: The Pink Poppy competition will be judged on creativity and originality. The competition opens Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 1pm AEST and closes on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 7.30pm AEST. One entry per person. Australian entries only. There is one prize winner.
