Aussie Giveaway Linkup #63: Winning lines

Ella: “Look Mum, a ma-tash”. I have no idea why she calls a moustache a “ma-tash”.

Princess Ella has had some winning lines this week. Like:

Ella (while I was cooking stir fry): “Mum, if you can’t cook very well, you can always just make easy things that I like – like ice cream!”
Ella (while eating stir fry): “Mum, this is delicious. You should practice cooking this every night”.

    AND

While in the bath on Friday night, Ella was blowing bubbles.
Ella: “Mum, did you hear that? Wow! I can talk underwater”.
Me: “Darling, I never doubted that for a second”.

The Shed: The reason I ditched a date with Princess Mary

IT’S NOT every day you get a chance to snub royalty. Yep, a letter arrived inviting me and Princess Kel to dinner with our Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Princess Mary and Prince Frederik of Denmark.

While it was an interesting offer, it did not take me long to respond in the negative – I’m enjoying spending some well-earned holidays with my own little royal family, the three princesses. There was also the little matter of forking out for the airfares to Canberra.

Now I assumed Princess Kel would be delighted when I told her I’d turned down the chance of a lifetime to spend as much time of my first holidays in seven months with her and the kids as possible. How wrong could I be?

    “YOU DID WHAT?’’ she exclaimed.

“Get on the ‘net and check out how much the fares would be,’’ she followed.

“But what would we do with the kids?,” I countered.

    “We’ll think of something.’’

Luckily, given the dinner was only a little over a week away, the airfares were the equivalent of the USA’s GDP and it made my original decision the correct one. Phew.

It soon became clear of Kel’s motive. “That would have made an awesome blog post,’’ she sighed.

Work, life and family commitments (not in that order) have made me a little scarce from www.threelilprincesses.com in recent months (is that the sound of cheering I hear?). A lot has happened in that time as I’ve worked hard to establish myself in a new position at work, a busy family and community life. Our little bubba Holly turned one and is growing at the rate of knots. Princess Ella has turned four and is far wiser than her years.

After a bath-time, um, disagreement between Kel and I tonight, Ella sided with her mum and said to me this:

    “Daddy?,’’ she said.

    “Yes, darlin’,’’ I replied.

“Sometimes I go with mummy’s team and then sometimes I’m on your team,’’ she said.

“Tonight I’m on mummy’s team and I’ll be on your team tomorrow I will. Will that be good?’’

“Yes darling’,’’ I replied unable to disguise my smile.

I guess after four years I should be happy she wants to be on my team … sometimes. I’m quite happy with my own little royal family thankyou very much.

Would you have ditched Princess Mary for your children?

  • Behold the chatterbox

    Behold the chatterbox

    two sisters cuddling
Butter wouldn't melt in their mouths - probably because they can't keep their mouths still long enough.

I KNOW that the visual of a woman with a telephone in one hand, head nodding, arm flailing and mouth flapping at a 100 miles an hour first starts to take shape about age one. I also know that when Zoey from GoodGoog sent out the tweet: “ The child is trying to kill me by continuous talking and never stopping EVER’’, I felt a huge amount of empathy for her.

With a one-year-old and four-year-old princess, I already have a chatterbox in each ear going from about 6.30am until 7pm EVERY day. I’ve learnt to just nod and say “that’s nice, darling’’ every minute and a half. Although, that often fails because every second sentence from the four year old is often a question.

The following incident then happened yesterday, which I know just reinforced my fate.

Princess Ella trailed behind me as I took Little Holly into the nursery for her morning nap. Ella knows she’s not allowed in there while I’m trying to put her to bed. She usually only hypes her sister up by singing and playing peek-a-boo, none of which help Holly settle.

On this day, instead of leaving when I asked, she popped herself up into the feeding chair and began the following dialogue:

“I’m a big girl now, aren’t I, Mum? I’m allowed in here, because I can be really quiet, can’t I, Mum? I won’t say anything. See? I’m being quiet. I’m a good girl.’’ And it went on.

    I rest my case.

Do you have chatterboxes? What are your coping mechanisms?

  • Pink or blue for you?

    Pink or blue for you?

    My pink baby, Holly

THIS is a post from the archives. However, it’s a question Princess Ella still asks now, so I thought it might give you all a giggle.

‘’MUM, can we take Holly back and get a boy one?’’

When Princess Ella uttered these words last week, my body went stiff, like someone had jabbed me with the oxytocin needle again to expel the placenta.

    My answer? No way.

It’s not because of all the months of chasing my husband around the bedroom like a cheetah chases a limping gazelle (yes, remember that scene from the Mum’s The Word column?).

Nor because of the spewing in those early months of being up the duff, that reminds me of how I used to spend New Year’s Eve.

It also has nothing to do with feeling like an ant pushing out an elephant at the final hurdle. OK, so maybe it has just a little something to do with that last bit.

No, the real reason is I’m quite partial to pink. Or, more correctly, I’ve got no idea how you go about dealing with boy bits. Yeah, yeah, I know, I’ve been preggers twice, so I must have some idea.

Princess Ella, on the other hand, seems to have a real fascination with ‘’scoody doodies’’ – her term, not ours. Apparently her friend Harry at child care has a scoody doodie.

‘’But he’s only got a little scoody doodie,’’ she says. Note: Harry is not his real name in fear of bruising the pride of his father.

For the record, girls, it’s been determined, have ‘’front bottoms’’. Oh, how boring. We’ve already got one bottom. No wonder she wants a brother.

So, what about you? Are you more partial to pink or blue? And what names have your children given their (usually not so) private bits?

  • Grateful for hot dates

    Grateful for hot dates

baby smiling in high chairThis week I’m grateful for:

    • Going out for coffee with The Bloke in The Shed… without children. Embarrassingly, it’s the first time we’ve done this in 11 months. How did that happen? It meant I drank a whole chai latte… hot! Every two minutes, we’d forget we were alone, resulting in a quick swivelling of the head and gasps of: “Oh gawd, we’ve lost the kids.’’
    • Another hot date on the beauty front. After last week’s rendezvous with the beautician, tomorrow I’ve somehow wrangled a date with the hairdresser. Feeling like a Kate Middleton-style princess at the moment. Please don’t hate me. If only I’d thought to run the review and giveaway of Garnier’s new beauty phenomenon, BB Cream – complete with photos of my ugly mug – AFTER the appointment. This is probably why I’ve refused to show the vlog of me putting the cream on.
    • Princess Ella teaching me good manners. She’s still oblivious to the world of swearing (thank ^&#*$), but if I say: “oh, stupid computer’’, she responds with: “we don’t say stupid, Mum’’. Or “I hate the skin on this mandarin,’’ she comes back with: “We don’t hate things, Mum’’. Sheesh.

  • Grateful for funny finds

    Grateful for funny finds

    girl laughing
    It's hilarious. Trust me!

    This week I’m grateful for:

    • Cleaning out the desktop folder and finding this half written blog post – Ella: “Is it tomorrow today?’’ Me: “No, it’s tomorrow tomorrow. It’s today today. But when tomorrow comes, it’ll be today again.’’ Long silence… Then: “oh’’.
    • And another: After cooking one piece of toast too many for Princess Ella, The Bloke in The Shed offers the other to me, knowing I’m always hungry (breastfeeding is sucking me dry!). He asks what I’d like on it. ‘’Marmalade jam, please,’’ I say. He heads to the fridge and a few seconds later I hear: “Is that the same as apricot conserve?’’ Me: ‘’Ah, no. That would be apricot.’’ He raises his eyebrows. Then the penny drops. “Yeah, right.’’ And who’s got baby brain?
    • Lastly, on a serious note, tomorrow I have a super hot date with a beautician and some facial, pedicure and manicure tools. That’s right, no children. I can’t even begin to imagine what that will be like. So, my only question is: “is it tomorrow today?’’ If not, HURRY UP TOMORROW! (PS. I’m using a voucher I got for Mother’s Day – yes, Mother’s Day – that had already gone past its expiry date. Thankfully the fabulous salon owner is happy to accept my voucher anyway!).

I’m joining with  Maxabella Loves ‘ grateful for, which is this week being hosted by the lovely Brenda from Mira Narnie.
