WIN: Aussie Giveaway Linkup #56: Melbourne edition

    Sisters at The Nut, Stanley

Wins of the week will be/were:

    • Flying into Melbourne today for what will be a whirlwind trip this time. I haven’t seen The Bloke in The Shed for three days, but will get to see him for 10 minutes at the Melbourne airport when he boards the plane I’m disembarking. It’s been a crazy week here.
    • Ella preparing herself for motherhood. She was growling at Li’l Holly for something or other. I told her it wasn’t her job to growl at her sister. Her response: “But I’m just practising to be a mum. I’m getting really good at it’’.
    • I have had too much of the glass of wine I’m drinking and therefore am forfeiting coming up with three things this week!

OK, time to start clicking to score yourself a win. What’s been the highlight of your week?

  • WIN: Aussie Giveaway Linkup #55: DisneyLand edition

WIN: Aussie Giveaway Linkup #55: DisneyLand edition

    Looking out window

    This week’s wins were:

    • Yesterday after swimming, we went to DisneyLand – via the iPad and a few YouTube clips. Ella said her favourite part was “the rollercoaster ride, where I had to remain seated at all times and keep my arms in the carriage’’. Cheaper than the real thing and far less scary.
    • I put a little note above my desk this week to remind myself to start looking into ways to monetise this blog a little, while still keeping it entertaining and informative for readers. Then, I kid you not, without me even trying I had two offers within the space of 24 hours. The power of positive thinking, hey. My brain now hurts a little after having spent the past day channelling BMW to give me a car. So far, no luck.
    • Having a play date on Friday with my cousin, which are just as much about the parents as the kids, if we’re honest with ourselves. As children, we used to sit on a red couch at our Nan’s and pretend it was a bus. Oh, the adventures we used to go on. Spookily, our two daughters – aged four – spent the entire morning creating a “bus’’ in the playroom to go on their own adventures. It’s funny how history repeats.

  • Aussie Giveaway Linkup #54: The on-the-nose edition

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #54: The on-the-nose edition

    father and daughter

So, my wins of the week were:

    • Childcare has had cases of chicken pox, school sores and gastro within the space of a fortnight. On Friday we all woke up with sniffly noses. There’s kind of relief in that.
    • More exciting news on the business side of things. We’ve brought on board the fabulous MissMel, who is behind the inspiring Proud To Be Me events. The three-state events are very much all about that – women being proud of who they are. I could write an entire post – or even a series of posts – on that topic! Make sure to follow the event on Facebook and Twitter.
    • During our trip home from Stanley last weekend, Julian asked what the big bales covered in plastic in the paddocks were. Me: “Silage’’. Julian: “Umm, what’s silage?’’ I decided I could tell him the truth or I could have some fun. I decided to have some fun and so told him it was hay mixed with cow poo to fertilise gardens. His eyes started to boggle as he kept seeing more and more bales and wondering how many gardens that was going to cover. I then forgot to tell him the truth later that night – it was my intention, promise. So the next day he went to work and announced in morning news conference that he finally discovered what silage was. His explanation was followed by quite a few sniggers. Yes, I’m a horrible wife.

    Wins of the week were:

    • Ella came home from vacation care this week with a sock puppet she’d made. Rather impressive it was. She then told me how a lady did a puppet show for them using puppets with real people’s heads. I’ve head of sticking your hand up someone’s…. well, you know what I’m getting at. But real people? I’m not too sure about that.
    • On the business front, some new clients have come on board, including now managing the gorgeous Jody and Nicole from Stay at Home Mum: Living On One Wage. If you haven’t checked out their site yet, then you’re missing out on how to live well on a budget. Smart cookies. And they generally have recipes for those in their “late night yummies’’ on Facebook too. Unless you look at Thursday night – that late night yummy was Johnny Depp.
    • Lastly, seeing Ella grow up to be just like her mum. This week I asked her to pack up her shoes. Her response: “I can’t Mum. I’m waiting for an email to come through on some other work I have to do.’’

OK, it must be time to start clicking. Right?

  • Aussie Giveaway Linkup #52: A swimmingly good edition

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #52: A swimmingly good edition

dad and baby swimmingYesterday we went for a dip in a private indoor pool (because we live in Tasmania and you would not go swimming otherwise at this time of year). The water was so warm and the air so cold, at one point I had flashbacks to a scene from Gorillas in the Mist as The Bloke in The Shed approached me in the water amid a sea of fog.

Ella loves the water. However, she’s had a real fear around learning to swim. Yesterday she was wearing her Wahu life jacket and gaining more confidence as the hour went on. After a year of trying to build her confidence to let go of us, she did. Her legs looked like a frog kicking and her fast-paddling hands were akin to a dog who’d just witnessed steak being put on the barbie onshore. But she was loving it. And we were beaming.

Holly, at just 20 months of age, didn’t want to be left out. So, without a floatation device, she tried her best to swim away from our grasp and go alone. She ended up drinking about 15 litres of water. Her nappy later proved that.

When we got home, I told Ella how proud I was of her for having a go. She responded with: “Thanks for being proud of me, Mum. I’m proud of you too’’. I’m still wondering exactly what it is she’s proud of me for.

Anyway, that’s my small but important win for the week. What about you? What win have you had? If you’re still waiting, get clicking below to score yourself a chance at something nice.

  • {Foodie} Be Natural Homemade breakfast bar recipe + giveaway

{Foodie} Be Natural Homemade breakfast bar recipe + giveaway

We spent yesterday in the kitchen cooking. Well, I cooked. Ella licked. We were given all this glorious Be Natural cereal, which many of you know I’m already a fan of. Crunchy clusters… ahhhhh!

So, instead of telling you how far the drool is progressing down my chin as I eat another bowl, I thought we’d go all MasterChef on you instead and create something for snack time.

We wanted to create something like this:

    Be Natural bars

    Be Natural bars

So here’s our version of the Be Natural bars – the Homemade Breakfast Bars.

    HOMEMADE BREAKFAST BARS

    INGREDIENTS:

Be Natural cereal3 sachets (35g each) of Be Natural Pink Lady, Apple and Raspberry Porridge

4 ½ cups of Be Natural Manuka Honey and Spice Clusters with Flakes cereal

    ½ cup shredded coconut

    125g butter

    1/3 cup brown sugar

    ½ cup honey

    METHOD:

Line a 26cm x 21cm baking tin with baking paper.

With a mortar and pestle, crush the cereal into smaller pieces. In a frypan, cook the porridge, cereal and coconut until light brown. It should take about 5-7 minutes on low to medium.

Be Natural being made into muesli bars

Meanwhile, melt the butter, brown sugar and honey in a pot until the sugar has dissolved. Let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes. When you drop a small bit of mixture into cold water, it should form a small ball. This is when you know it’s ready.

Combined all ingredients in a bowl and then transfer into the baking tin. Be sure to push down the ingredients tightly into the tin. Let it cool.

    Be Natural

The girls were impatient to eat it, so we ended up putting it into the fridge for a little while. Then cut into squares.

Plus, there’s more… We’ve teamed up with Be Natural and Kellogg to give one lucky reader the chance to score a year’s supply of Be Natural and Kellogg products. The prize includes:
