Aussie Giveaway Linkup #119: The birthday season is approaching

    Princess Castle Birthday Cake

October sees the beginning of Birthday Season in our house. It’s Holly in October, Ella in November and mine in December. So I’m full on into Pinterest birthday cake mode. (What on earth did we do before Pinterest? Oh, that’s right, we looked at our Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake books.)

Holly has decided she wants Peppa Pig.

Ella has decided she wants Strawberry Shortcake. (Wasn’t that something Nan used to cook?)

I’m not sure why I feel the need to have to cook a cake each year, but I do. If I’m honest with myself, I quite enjoy the challenge. Maybe in a past life I was a birthday cake maker. Maybe.

These are the cakes we’ve made over the last couple of years:

I refuse to put up Ella’s Wizard of Oz cake from last year. It was the biggest failure. And, as is always the case, the first cake anyone outside our family had witnessed. This year it’s family only!

Do you go through a birthday season each year? What cakes have you made before?

  • Aussie Giveaway Linkup #118: What Queensland taught us about our daughters

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #118: What Queensland taught us about our daughters

We were already aware of the differences between Ella and Holly, but holidaying in Queensland and visiting the numerous theme parks revealed just how different they really are.

Ella, nearly 6, was petrified of many of the rides. How on earth we managed to get her on the Wild Rapid Ride at Dreamworld I will not know. On the other hand, she loved the shows – the seals, dolphins, Dora – and getting to meet all the characters.

Holly, nearly 3, loved the rides. She was happy to ride a plane and let it take her as high as it could or jump on the rather mean-looking Superman Escape rollercoaster (although, thankfully she’s still a tad too little to actually experience that one). On the other hand, she hated the loud noise of the shows. She screamed the entire time from fear. And characters? Well, this was her reaction to SpongeBob SquarePants:

    Are your children VASTLY different?

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #116: On vacation

    TLP1

Woohoo! We’re on holidays. Not that travelling with kids is really ever a holiday. Especially the bit about getting them to sleep at a decent hour in a strange bed each night. Hard work, I tell you.

But it has been nice seeing our born and bred Tassie girls excited by the idea of a dip in the water before breakfast, bats at night and more options for babyccinos in one Queensland city than in the whole of Tassie.

After a few nights in Noosa, we’re then tackling Australia Zoo, Sea world, Dreamworld, Wet ‘n’ Wild and Movie World.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions on our Facebook page of what to do and of your fave theme park too.

Stay tuned for more on our travels or follow us on Facebook , Twitter  and Instagram .

In the meantime, here is this week’s Aussie Giveaway Linkup!

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #115: Spring is in the air

It’s a short and sweet blog post this week. Here’s a photo of me and the girls at Anzac Park at Ulverstone, here in North West Tasmania. Spring is definitely in the air. Bring on tomorrow.

    Ulverstone Anzac Park Tasmania

This park holds special memories for us, because it was where we played when we were kids. Our beloved rocket and spaceship climbing equipment are now locked up for safety reasons (I must take a photo of them next time), but the girls get a kick out of still being able to see what once entertained us.

Oh, and before we get onto this week’s linky, a huge happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. The Bloke in the Shed has plenty of treats in store tomorrow.

Do you have a favourite park? What do your kids love most about it?

  • Aussie Giveaway Linkup #114: Book Week fever

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #114: Book Week fever

It’s been Book Week fever in our house this week. Actually, it’s Book Week fever every week here.

    Bumblebee dress up

Holly went as a bee – although what bee, I’m not really sure.

    Little Red Riding Hood outfit

Ella went as Little Red Riding Hood – with pink shoes. Such a GREAT look!

See more photos and information about their dress up outfits.

    Tasmanian rainbow

And I spent three days straight writing and interviewing for a book as part of my Kellie O’Brien Media business. This was the view from my desk.

Did your kids take part in Book Week this week? What did they dress up as?

  • Aussie Giveaway Linkup #113: Saturday night ritual

Aussie Giveaway Linkup #113: Saturday night ritual

    ella hair

This linky is going up later and later on a Saturday night. And it’s all due to a little ritual that’s started here.

Saturday night Ella is allowed to stay up just a little bit longer to watch whatever age-appropriate movie the TV can dish up. It’s become “our time’’ together and she looks forward to it all day.

I’m not sure if she’s A. excited about cuddling up on the couch with me; B. excited about what the movie might be; or C. excited that she gets to stay up later. Probably the latter.

Tonight, it was Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory – the old version with Gene Wilder. I have to admit, I’d never seen this version. We loved it. Much better songs than the Johnny Depp version. Although it was lacking one crucial element – Johnny Depp.

Funnily, we’d only just watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with the delectable Mr Depp last Sunday.

And this is why I love that she’s into chapter books now. Because we get to read the book, watch the movie and, when another version of the movie invites us in, she gets excited about watching that too.

So we’re in chocolate heaven right now.

Tomorrow she’s spending the day with The Bloke in The Shed at a meeting at Anvers Chocolate Factory at Latrobe, which is a beautiful café and chocolate museum with viewing of the chocolates and fudge being made via a window. I think Ella is envisaging she’ll see chocolate rivers, Willy Wonka Chocolate Bars and Oompa Loompas.

Are your kids Roald Dahl fans?
