Uncovering the true magic of childhood – apparently

Li'l Holly showing how to make a Vita Wheat magically disappear – if the seagull doesn't get it first

IT STARTED with a tweeted conversation with Romina from Martyrhood. Her children had cracked open the magic kit and were going all David Copperfield on her – minus sawing women in half. That could get the carpet dirty.

It brought back memories of my childhood, torturing my cousins by making their Red Skins and Milk Bottles disappear. I even tweeted “oh, how I would have loved to watch my 12-year-old self trying to make a ball disappear under a cup”. Sadly for Romina, she’d already endured this trick a number of times by her children.

By sheer coincidence, on Christmas Day some of the O’Brien family members had put together a magic show for the rest of us. Ella even got to play the assistant, which primarily required her to stand with her hands on her hips watching the featured magician. Thankfully we didn’t have to worry about her disappearing into the back of a box or being given the straight jacket treatment inside a tank of water.

The highlight was Ella’s uncle trying to guess which coloured block was taken out of a wooden box by his niece. The fact he had to keep referring to the instructions kind of killed the magic. The O’Briens won’t be tacking this show on the road any time soon.

All this magic obviously began to rub off on Ella. While eating dinner the other night, she announces: “I have a magic trick for you all.’’ We all sit to attention, bar Li’l Holly who’s too busy showing how to magically make a sausage bake disappear. We waited with baited breath. This could be good. She’s really taken in the concept of magic through all the various tricks she’s witnessed.

“Ready?’’ she asks. We nod. Ella takes a deep breath, sits up tall and says: “Look, I can talk with my eyes closed’’.

Have you children delved into the world of magic? What’s their favourite trick?

    WIN: Aussie Giveaway Linkup #30

A BIG Happy New Year to YOU. Thanks for supporting us throughout 2011. After a week’s break, we’re BAAAACK!

What a break it was. We somehow managed to fit in three Christmas lunches (the joys of big families), ruined any chance of Princess Ella ever going on a waterslide again (full story to come later) and last night at Devonport’s Eve in the City: Lantern Dreams Festival our family latern with all our hopes and dreams sailed off somewhere on the Mersey River.

Devonport Eve in the City: Lantern Dreams Festival

Unless it sunk to the bottom after the Spirit of Tasmania went passed.

Devonport, Eve in the City: Latern Dreams Festival

Then, of course, there was the most important day of all. You didn’t forget, did you? When I woke Friday morning, The Bloke in The Shed and the two princesses had this for me:

    GHD, Christmas, travel hairdryer,

    Spoilt much?

Don’t stress about your gift for me. I know it’s still coming. This week I’ll even shower before 8am, so the poor postie doesn’t have to witness me in my puppy dog PJs for the fifth time in two weeks. In the meantime, I might have to win myself something from below while I wait.

  • …And that’s the end of the story

…And that’s the end of the story

WHAT a year, hey? I stepped into the mummy blogosphere and, just like Alice, ended up in some bizarre wonderland. Lucky I’m already short and could fit through the door. What I’ve learnt through the online world, not to mention juggling two children instead of one in 2011, astounds me some days. Twitter was merely an idiot I’d rather avoid and Facebook fan pages were for people with big egos.

I know my brain is sure to get another workout next year. Look out Google+ business pages. For now though, it needs a bit of a break. I won’t be here or on social media much either. I know, shock, horror. How on earth will I survive?

For those wondering, the Aussie Giveaway Linkup will return Sunday, January 1 due to the limited number of giveaways running at the moment. In the meantime, I’d love to bore you to tears with my bad poetry. Brace yourselves.

    Christmas tree

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not a Zhu Zhu nor a mouse.

Stockings were hung by the plastic tree with care,

Including Dad’s tie. Who put that there?

    Zhu-Fari, elephant, Wharton,

Ella and Holly were all snug in their beds,

While visions of more Zhu Zhus danced in their heads.

And Mum she drank wine, Dad a Bourbon night cap,

With Carols on, while playing with a new iPhone app.

    Zhu-Fari, elephant, Wharton, Zhu Zhu,

When on top of a pressie there arose such a clatter,

Wharton, the Zhu-Fari, had made the presents scatter.

Across the room, as the wrapper he did bend

Still didn’t reveal if the gift was another Zhu friend

    Zhu Fari, elephant, Wharton,

He would have to wait, just like each girl and boy,

Though Wharton had to admit, Mum was looking rather coy.

As he finally drifted off, he was confident of Christmas glory,

And that, my friend, is the end of the Zhu story.

As I said, my brain needs a break. And the tie thing? That was Ella’s way of decorating the tree.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and looking forward to tempting you with lots of good things in the New Year. Take care. xx

DISCLOSURE: I have spent much of this year as a Zhu Zhu mummy blogger ambassador. This was my final project for Zhu Zhus and Hunter Toys. If you’re still looking for a stocking filler for the kids, I highly recommend a little furry Zhu Zhu. They are little lifesavers when witching hour arrives.

  • Happy anniversary… to us

    Happy anniversary… to us

wedding on train tracksIT’S 8pm and I’m indulging in a little glass of sav blanc to celebrate nine years of wedded bliss. Nine years? Far out. No. Don’t worry, I’m not going to lower myself to jokes about jail time. I’m a Mum, not a Dad.

Last month we took the girls to Strahan, on Tassie’s West Coast, to show them the place where we exchanged vows. Long before the wedding day, I cottoned on to the fact this was going to be a longer commitment than the one we made the day we bought the box set of Entourage. And likely not always as glamorous or fun. If I had a double chocolate brownie for every challenge we’ve had to face together, he’d be married to a very different person right now. But I wouldn’t change any of it.

    Strahan, balcony, View 42 Restaurant,

Taking the princesses to Strahan was by far the highlight of my year. Standing on the balcony, overlooking the harbour with the girls, brought tears to my eyes. Princess Ella has watched our wedding video more than 50 times. She knew all the spots. Every line spoken at each spot. She also wanted to know when the wedding was going to start and if she could play the role of the flower girl this time.

My Christmases now have greater meaning because of that one perfect day. Add to that the fact The Bloke in The Shed proposed Christmas Eve and you’ll understand why I love Christmas. Even the memory of him proposing inside the Commodore, because I’d refused to get out and get sand in my shoes (talk about spoiling the moment), doesn’t spoil it. By the way, I made up for the sand in the shoes incident on our wedding day. See.

    Strahan, wedding, Tasmania,

To now have two little people to help share in the joy we have for this time of year is pure bliss. I fully realise how incredibly blessed I am. I’m truly thankful.

So, happy anniversary to my Bloke in The Shed. Here’s to hitting double figures next year. x

  • My Tasmanian Backyard 2012 Calendar free printable download

My Tasmanian Backyard 2012 Calendar free printable download

My Tasmanian Backyard LogoTHE lovely Bron from Maxabella Loves left a comment on the blog this week how I’m always doing “fresh and random’’ things. I guess I like to challenge myself. Not to mention putting myself under an enormous amount of stress. And like we all need a little more of THAT during the Christmas period.

I know there’s huge risk in the things I organise. They could fail and I could come off looking like an absolute dimwit. Not like that’s anything new.

Last week I sat down and made some blog, business and life goals for 2012. It was nice to see them all on paper and to clear them from my head so I can concentrate on more pressing matters – like how to keep Princess Ella out of the laundry before Christmas. I fear she may learn the truth about Santa and who really drinks the beer she leaves out Christmas Eve.

    Christmas present

One of the goals is getting back to more storytelling, because that’s what I’ve spent my life doing. I also want to have more live events, like the Royal Wedding Pyjama Part-ay and the Carols in the Blogger Domain Party.  Hopefully, one every two months – but we’ll see. Saturday’s Carols party attracted more than 60 people and, during such a busy time of year, I was pretty happy with that. Plus, I had an absolute blast, which was the main aim. Yes, it’s all about me.

But today, it’s actually all about you. I can’t give you all a nappy bag, two nights in a Melbourne apartment or a stroller, but I can give you a little bit of my home state. Today, you can download the My Tasmanian Backyard 2012 Calendar for free. It’s printable, so you can copy as many off as you like and give to family and friends as last minute Christmas gifts. It may even inspire you to come for a visit.

I did contemplate putting a price on it, mainly because it took so darn long to do. In the end, I thought it was best to use as my little pressie to you all to say thanks for being such incredible supporters of this wee li’l blog. It means more to me than the half block of Cadbury’s chocolate I devoured last night – and that’s saying something. I hope you enjoy it.

You can download it here, by clicking on the image below or on the My Tasmanian Backyard Calendar page.
